Thanks for you time and effort to make the video. Been out of the business for 10 years and don't want to spend a ton of time working on cars anymore. This video is nice to be able to see just what is needed without having to try and figure out what you have to take apart and what you don't, makes it so much easier. I am grateful!!!!

Hey man thanks for the video. My car was a little different, the intake valve and throttle body go around the backside so I just had to take out the tensioner and then the alternator, but its all good got the new one in and working without taking it to a shop so once again thanks!

Hey cool video, did you use a go-pro camera or something like that? because really good quality. I was hoping this would help in my vr6 alternator removal but it seems like the 1.8 has a bit more room to work around. But thanks for the video and keep up the great work, by the way you are really quick, probably would take me at least 20 min to do the same thing you just did.

I have a 2002 1.8t. Some 1.8ts from the same year are different then the one shown here.Many require you to remove the tensioner pulley BEFORE you can remove the alternator. One of the alternator bolts WILL NOT clear the tensioner.It's pretty simple, but, still a pain in the @ss.And when doing so, you HAVE to remember to put the black bracket attached to the tensioner on the outer (left side), or the pulleys will not line up, and your belt will slip or shred. These cars are such a friggin pain.

hey dude not sure if you’re gonna see this, but what’s that small hose clipped onto the inter cooler piping? it’s right next to the alternator. on my car it slipped out and was rubbing on the belt and now there’s deep ridges on the hose.
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 4 жыл бұрын
I'd have to see pictures or video... upload a short video so I can see what's going on / is possibly broken or missing. If you just need to hold the hose away from the belt, you can use zip ties to tie it away from any moving parts. Hose #24 or #24A in this diagram (bottom left of image)? volkswagen.7zap.com/ImgsWatermark/images//Bilder/251/251121350.png

Is it common for 1.8 head ports to clogged with carbon? do you have a video how to diagnose E-combi valves?(seem more common) I notice you use rubber grease,you have a part number, do you get this from VAG dealers or part wholesalers(imc,world pack)?
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 11 жыл бұрын
You mean the SAI passages in the head? No. All the SAI faults that I have ever run into, were due to component failure (pump, vacuum hose, combi valve, relay etc.). E-Combi valve? As in electronically controlled?

How do you remove the plug (I'm guessing its the sensor) that's connected to the alternator? I removed the wire that's attached with a nut. I can't get the darn plug out. It's the only thing attached to the alt. I heard a flat head would do the trick but I don't want to break it. Any tips?

I am ordering a replacement alternator for my 2000 Beetle 1.8T and it may come without the pulley. Is it difficult to remove the pulley from the old unit and replace? I don't think fitment will be an issue as I am getting a good Bosch part. I am more interested to know if the pulley is pressed on or bolted in and if bolted can I remove it without a pneumatic wrench. Great video btw. Thanks!!!
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 10 жыл бұрын
pyrokid888 The pulleys are threaded into place. An air gun makes it easy on pulleys that have a nut... if it is a one-way-clutch pulley, then I use a couple of special tools and do it by hand (search my channel for "clutch pulley".

I have a 2001 Jetta 1.8L Wolfsburg. I got a new cheap alternator for it, a TYC 213852. Your video helped me get the old one off. But im having an issue with the new one. The old alternator fit so tight i used a pry bar to get it out. But the bolt mounts on the new alternator seems too wide. When put into place there is at least an 1/8" wiggle room between the alternator mount & the engine mount. Its as if the thick threaded mounts on the right side of the alternator werent centered, its sticking out too far to the right to make a snug fit. I cant figure out if im overlooking something obvious or its a flaw. Ive read reviews of the product & people say it it fit their 2001 Vw 1.8 perfectly. I'm left scratching my head at this point. Have you ever seen this before? Is there a trick to it or should i return the part asap? Another great vid & thanks for the insight.

+Thomas EXOVCDS Ok, based on that my spacers are already retracted, causing the extra space for the easy install. But i didnt see u do anything to the spacers when u re-installed the alternator. Do they slide back into place, making a snug fit, as you tighten down the mounting bolts?

I'm thinking of replacing my alternator pulley with a lightweight non-clutched pulley. Have you seen any issues with non-clutched pulleys on VWs?
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 7 жыл бұрын
Older vehicles have always had non-clutch pulleys. Going back might be ok, but in some cases it can cause rattle. I have gone the other way, where the car did not have a clutch pulley, to help eliminate rattle from the belt tensioner (mk3 TDI's). I would stick with the clutch pulley setup.

is the alternator for a 1.8 t the same as a 2.0 alternator and how do you lock the tensioner? I know you said lock pin but not sure what that is .thanks
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 8 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if they are the same... could be. A parts store or online catalog will tell you. you don't need a locking pin. Move the tensioner with a wrench and while holding the tensioner in the released position, remove the belt and then slowly relax the tensioner. the tool just makes things easier. use a drill bit that fits into the locking hole (look for it, you will see it)... but again, not needed.

Would you recommend upgrading to the VR6 alternator for my 1.8t? 120a vs 90a. (assuming mine is factory spec on 2000 Beetle)
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 7 жыл бұрын
The 120A is listed in the parts catalog as an option for the Beetle... so yes, should fit / be a nice upgrade. Just make sure that the pulley is the same size (might have more grooves / different belt width, if you are ordering as a / for VR6, instead of for a 1.8T).

I have a quick question I have a audi tt 2003 same engine and my alternator was bad I replaced it but the car won't come on at all with the alternator out amd the battery still hook up the car still turns on the light and radio but when I replace the alternator its not doing nothing did I hook it up wrong
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 11 жыл бұрын
Yes, something is wrong. I don't think you can go wrong with the hook-up, since there's just the small wire connector and the large charging cable. Is this a new alternator or a used / rebuilt unit? Might be something wrong with the alternator.

I got it now but the car is still not coming on the light and radio still come on the battery is good it keep make a clicking nosie
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 11 жыл бұрын
Make sure that the ground cable has a good connection at the transmission / engine. Verify that the clicking is coming from the starter (solenoid). If the battery does not have enough power to turn the engine, the starter will just click. It does not take a lot of power to turn the lights & radio on, but it does take a lot of power / current, to turn the engine. Try to start the engine with a jumper battery / 2nd vehicle.

@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 11 жыл бұрын
tyson braziel Can you send me a picture or record a video and send me the link? Where does it say fuse? Standard or Automatic Transmission? Even if the Alternator is not hooked up, the engine should still start. If the engine was running "before" you removed / changed the alternator, then it should run now as well... provided you did not forget something.

trunkz007 Remove the 3 exhaust manifold bolts from the top (that mount the turbo to the manifold) . Disconnect the intake hose from the turbo, disconnect the output hose / pipe. Disconnect the exhaust down pipe from the turbo, disconnect the coolant & oil lines from the turbo. remove the passenger drive shaft. Disconnect the remaining mounting bolts from the turbo & remove it out the bottom. I might have missed a few things.... basically remove what you have to, to get the turbo out.

No, should not have to. Turn the key on and leave on for 30-40 seconds, turn of for 30-40 seconds... then start the engine. If you have a scan tool, clear the codes before starting. If your scan tool can do throttle adaptation, can't hurt to do that before starting the engine.
