a couple more things... as our "New Beetles" are getting somehow a bit older: the round plastic guide inside likes to slide out of the guide. (on the top and bottom - aging thingy) Using a screw driver and popping the the "guide" back into it helps to make it easier to slide back the whole "light fixture" ... LOL - thanks for the video... I learned a lot!!!!

thanks for the video. I have the Haynes repair manual and they don't give any instructions saying it's too difficult and just to take it a VW mechanic, who when I checked 6 years ago wanted 60 dollars to change the bulb !!

In my town a local European car service (3/21/2023) wanted $125 for each side to replace the low beam bulbs on a 2006 VW Beetle. They said they got $155.00 per hour on labor and this was a 30 minute job on each side. I watched several videos and got mine done in about 20 min. on each side and new low beam bulbs cost me about $48.00 total. One more thing I did was I put 3 very thin strips of blue painters tape on each headlight/body. One at the top, and one on each side then carefully cut the strip in half at the headlight gasket and body to help with alignment when I reinstalled the housing in the body. Be careful when first removing the light assembly housing from the car body as it can slide out pretty quickly if your not ready for it. But what ever you do remember everything is plastic so be gentle and you will be ok.

I’ve just bought a yellow 2003, the right headlight has gone so this has helped very much. There’s hardly any room in their engine bays but with mine being a tdi i have a fuel filter in the area of that lever 🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️ Have you done the left hand side ? Looks like the fuse box is in the way

My 2000 beetle has the same mechanism tab and lever...it can be difficult lining up the grooves along side the can.

hey bro, what about a beam reset after removing the headlamp ? that broken backing may cause some condensation problems in a few months. You should buy a new one. If you warm up the backing a little before removing, less chance it will break like that.

The driver's side removal is far more difficult but I figured it out. Now tell me how to change the low-beam bulb. It’’s smaller and mounted differently than the running light and hi-beam bulbs.

The right side headlight assembly is the easiest. How about showing us how the left side is removed. The battery and aircleaner is blocking access to the locking lever.

Remove the light and search for places water can get in to the unit. Once you have found it use silicone to seal it up.

BMAC VAGS I used your great advice and removed the light - Took the plastic off the rear of the unit and noticed a small piece of the plastic has been broken off. I used hot glue to seal it - hopefully it should be good!! I will keep you posted during our next drive in the wet.3

BMAC VAGS I broke the little button you push in. the unit seems tight ,when I pushed the lever down, will it disingage and the whole unit fly out on the road, or will it stay in? should I tape lever in place?. thanks

Dirt gets in the head light retaining catch ( the plastic thing hes unlocking) slides in a track... They just get full of dirt and sand from the road... it happens... thats why they are hard to turn.. take them out and clean the dirt out.. It becomes all smooth again.
