Excellent job!! I’ve never seen pistons rusted on like that. She’s a good short block. I bet someone took it out because it’s a semi auto engine. Threw the engine to side and put in a manual engine. Thank you for the shoutout!! I see I forgot the washer for the case splitter tool.

Thank you so much my friend I always appreciate those tools. Makes life simpler. The block seems fine! I’ll run it out to Jim’s and leave it with him. It will need cut of course, but seems like a nice block.

Brings back memories of the learning years of the late 70's. My mentor would have wood when we picked up an auto stick case. The area where the 3 crank shims went never had hammer damage.

Thank you for being here, that mess is not going to be fun to clean up. It’s winter time so it makes it tougher. I believe the block is good since the standard bearings are still in it. Just going to need a small amount of machine work. I’m going to check the crank.

The last engine that Emily and I took apart was just as stubborn. I had to do the same thing and literally hammer off the jugs. It helps to hammer back and forth or on the top side and then the bottom. This way the jug doesn't get wedge in the case. Good job and yes, save all nuts and bolts lol🤠😎👍

Lucky me! I was dining alone this evening, and your video was my entertainment!! Way to persevere on this one - that case looks very nice - worth the effort, for sure. I have 2 quick questions: 1) When the shop bores out the cylinders, is it OK if the case has some pieces of the "jugs" stuck to the cylinder sides? I have not heard of or seen that before.... 2) You mentioned you would have the case checked out. Who does that and what are they looking for? If this is covered in a future video, I can wait! I hope you have a good weekend.
@SladesVWBeetle
@SladesVWBeetle 2 жыл бұрын
Hey my friend glad you enjoyed the video. I remove those pieces from the cylinders. They came right off. They would remove them anyhow. They were just stuck. I’ll probably send it off to VW machine shop. Since it had standard bearings, if everything checks out OK. It will be cut to .20…Should be a good block.

VW Darrin has showed on his videos how to check these blocks to see if boring is required for the crank. But he just does it by feel and not the hitech tools a shop uses. Thank you sir, the cases are the same. But here’s the deal, it has a torque converter instead of a fly wheel. And when you pull out in an auto stick, there’s no clutch to dump hard!! So it pulls out very gently. So the main bearings really never take a beating in the case. I love getting a hold of these engines when I can.

Battery is new and I have 13volts at the coil with ignition on. Bug was running ruff on my 2 mile drive to work before it quit. Come to find out my engine was really dirty and I had alot of dirt on my air cleaner. I live next to a horse ranch in the desert. I tried to turn the crank but it wont turn, and yep its in netural.
