A Few Tips: 1. The first tin to go on is the one that sits below and behind the Main Pully, and it has to go on BEFORE you install the pully. 2. If you do this process WITHOUT Oil in the case, you can flip the engine upside down to install the lower tins. 3. Depending in the size of the gaskets, it may be necessary or helpful to put the intake manifold gaskets in place before you install the cylinder shrouds.

The workshop manual method of setting the thermostat: with the thermo on the rod but not bolted to the mounting bracket. Fit the bracket with a slack nut and adjust until the thermo is just touching the top of the bracket then tighten the bracket nut. Now pull the thermo down to the bottom of the bracket (closing the flaps) and secure with the bolt.

Nice work.. Very informative. The only issue I think I have with my tin is that the rear or front tin.. Depending on your point of view... The one that sits up against the apron and under the pulley that has the air hose holes is leaves a big gap on mine.. Not sure if its the wrong year or mismatched. Something I'll have to look at.
@SladesVWBeetle

Thank you very much I truly appreciate the kind words. When you say a gap, is the seal missing between apron and the tin?

@@SladesVWBeetle it's where the tins meet.. Not the seal side. Hard to explain lol. The tin that sits under the pulley, the point at which it curves around and up to the left side and meets the rear tin... Or front tin.

@@SladesVWBeetle I'm aware of at least three different front tins that where made and are available aftermarket. I'm guessing I just have none matching tin. It's be great to have all original stock tin but it's not the case, sadly.

I have a dog house cooler as well. I see that your oil cooler looks like mine. If I am not mistaken, arnt you missing a piece of tin that encloses the oil cooler? Like I said, mine looks the same, but I believe we should have a tin to the right of it. seems like there are screw holes there in the shroud for it. am i incorrect?

Hi Shawn!! Everything is there. I skipped ahead to 26:00 to double check. The oil cooled is enclosed. Unless I’m misunderstanding what you mean my friend.

i am revisiting this video since I have been wanting to install the lower tins on my motor since first purchasing this 73 beetle sedan. I wanted to ask where I could get replacement clips for the doghouse fan/flap linkage? Also need to replace the thermostat (old one is shot) plus the rod that connects to it. The rod is missing.....discovered when I pulled the motor (first time ever). I am hoping my heater boxes will mount correctly with the tins (plus the studs are in bad shape). I plan to visit a local VW shop and/or contact Awesome Powdercoat to see if they have the parts I need. Thanks for the sticker that just arrived too! My shirt should be arriving soon!

I've eliminated my heaterboxes, no need in south Texas. Do they make tins for J-tubs. I've seen where people have fabricated their own, but my skill set does not go that far. thanks -steve

Hey Slades, Quick question for you, I recently picked up a 71 bus that came with a 1200cc single port which had been modified to a 1600cc. I don't know the backstory behind the engine. Anyway, I noticed that your fan shroud had a large lever and air flaps along the bottom of it as well as the thermostat. My fan shroud does not have these pieces. Is that a major problem? If it's necessary, do you know if I can buy the mechanism or am I looking at a whole new shroud? Thanks for any help! This is my first engine rebuild so I'm still learning as I go, but your videos are really helping me!

Yes I decided to cover over the vents on the apron. Just something different of course. All of the tins I used, came off of the original engine out of the parts car.

They catch fire because a lot of people use a plastic fuel filter in the engine bay, the plastic cracks and spills fuel everywhere.
