20 some odd years ago, I restored old bugs and buses for a living. I pulled dozens of motors. Quit doing so around 1998. 21 years after my last VW, I got a '61 ragtop. Watching your video helped me remember everything I need to do to pull the motor. THANKS for that. It was fun and entertaining. Might I suggest you quit using pliers on your battery cables? Proper tool for the job and all.

There is a trick I used many years ago when I was changing a VW Bug clutch! Once the engine was on the floor, I jacked up the drivers side real high, removed the tire and just pulled the engine out the wheelwell. The shroud easily clears the brake drum if you slide it out sideways!

Great video. Sure, there are always the know-it-alls that have to chime in on other ways you could have done it, but you did it, and you got some good time in with your daughter and friends. Very good video a Buddy of mine showed me that. Using the bottom of a old Shopping cart frame. Is a excellent way of rolling a VW motor around your garage an its also a perfect. Height for removing and installing the motor i a car By raising and lowering the back of the Bug once he was riding in my Jeep with me and saw a old. Shopping cart on the side of a highway we were on he made me turn around and drive back to the spot so he could cut the top portion off and set a motor on that. Would fit under a workbench he built. In his garage for that purpose. Keep in mind that guy has owned 27 Bugs in his lifetime and a few Buses and in his defense he told me he has always found abandoned Shopping Carts though his travels and wouldn’t ever take one from a grocery store all he uses is the very bottom part that. Has the 4 wheels on it I used his to pull a motor on a 71. And it worked great It was many years ago i did that work but I remember. That i had to use the bumper on the Bug as a jack point which of course isnt designed to do that but with some wheel chocks and a few wood blocks i was able to pull the motor by myself pretty easily BTW i thought it was also. Really cool to see your kids participating in the video and the work I was a Woodworker for over 20 years and i tried to teach. My son at a young age. A lot about the trade he is now 26 years old and has become a pretty good Craftsman although he chose to have a career in the computer industry

I'm learning to pull my first motor from this video. My VW mechanic does it by himself all the time. One can do it but I'm sure its much easier with two. As seen in the video its a balancing act. Drop some, then pull some. Drop some then pull some. Do that until its clear to drop all the way.

I worked with two guys who (with practice) could remove this engine in 1/2 hour. Found out later the reason for all the practice. They "borrowed" a newer bug after hours from a dealer. Had it off the lot and back again, with serial number removed, crappie engine. They changed the serial number to match theirs. Never got caught.

It’s easier if you don’t have the car up so high when pulling the engine. Once the engine is away from the transmission and on the ground, then jack up the car at the “Y”, which is the area just before where the transmission cradle starts to divide. And all those boards are unstable.
@jordanherrmann95846 жыл бұрын
I've found that it's more practical to lift that sucker up just about as high as you can in the rear so that when you drop the motor it slides out from under it with ease. You can see they got hung up for just a second on the tin and almost couldn't quite pull it out even at that angle. Otherwise you start to pull tin, alternator/doghouse, rear bumper, etc etc just to clear the motor to pull it out all the way. Everyone I know who wrenches on these vw's at home with their DIY jack stands and floor jack does it the same.

They are doing it backwards you pull motor back with car lower then jack car up with motor on blocks and you don’t have the motor wobbling all over the place. Use a wider board on jack that holds the motor and heat exchanger pipes
