Great to see you doing these videos. Manfred brought them to my attention. I will be doing the same with that Empi GTV look ‘74 Beetle he has in his shop.

It’s a great project, I would take the case to a good machine shop that knows Volkswagens, there great cars, and there’s some great vendors, Cipi1, J Bug, Wolfsburg West, have fun make it how you want it.

The best thing about it is the clean title. You got one of those with it, right? Lots of built motors or even used available. Building one will be great experience, but time and frustration go with that. Money won't be that much different. Much of the outer panels (fenders and lids) look similar shape to the motor. Lots of replacement options there too. Bugs can be jalopies or hypercars and everything in between. You get to make it however you want it.

Build a stock motor out of the H5. It'll be fine. For higher performance use a better block like an AE or AH. I have a F0 and that's originally a 1300, that'll be a bone stock 1600. DRP has used cranks for good prices, German OG. I'd even say a stock 1600 with dual 34's or even a 1641 if you want. Just no high compression, big cams, or big displacement. Good luck! Look forward to seeing more.

I know it would take part of the challenge away but wouln't it be easier to buy a running replacement engine? That way you can focus on everything else and get it daily driving faster...Anyways awesome proyect and a beautiful patina.

H5 block is good reliable block. At least that’s what I’ve been told over the years. Single relief case so don’t try to build crazy HP or rev the snot out of it. Mine is an H5 with new AA performance 1600 jugs and 1600 single port heads. Runs like a champ. You can also assume the heads that came on that engine are cracked and seats are beat to sh*t. Got my assembled heads with machined seats from CIP1 for 180 each.

I feel for you. I bought a 73 for $1800 and it ran till I got it home. Was going to freshen up the motor and found all sorts of issues. On top of all that I got screwed out of the title.

Can you use the other case? That looked like a dual port engine wich usually have better cases and bigger oil ports. You'll probably need to sacrifice the liners and pistons, but maybe the inside is good.

Different engine. How did you get single port after starting with a dual port?

I am a car guy but realize that just 1 liter of oil can contaminate 1 million liters of (drinking) water, don’t spray af oily bits into the environment. A good car wash use an oil filtering system.

Wow, looks like you bought yourself a project. It looks to me that everything you bought was sitting outside for a long time and collected water. No body parks a perfectly good car for a long time. The motor that you pulled apart did not come with the car and is from an older car. It is a single port motor, but if the case is good then it can be used as a basis for a good stock rebuild. If I were you I would read every book and manual I can find about rebuilding a VW air cooled and even look for a local VW mechanic, if thee is one in the local area. Good luck.

the only problem with these cranckcase are the oil galeries. In fact, you can build anything under 80 90hp without any problem. More than this and you'll need a good oil lubrification. Anyway, you'll need to change your camshaft and it'll need brand new pushrods, yours are destroyed but even if they were great, new crank shaft means new pushroad. Cylinders and pistons are destroyed too but it's not a problem, these parts doesn't cost much and usualyly, you change them every rebuild.

Thanks!! What do you think about the lifters?
@Kanrinin01
@Kanrinin01 11 ай бұрын
@@BeloshapkaAutoBuilds I'm sorry, when I said "pushrod", I mean lifters, they're toasted and if you use them with a new camshaft, they'll destroy your new cams. A pack of lifters doesn't cost much, it's not worth the risk
