Great idea using the drill when lapping in the valve never seen that before, good method . I used a bluing or layout fluid on the setas and valve when i lap them in gives you a fast visual.. Back when i was in high school and ork at a auto machine shop they trained me to do all the valve work in that shop. I was told to alway have the intake valves seal at the edge on the valve and on the exhaust in the center due to the heat. I always did a three angle grind on the seat infact that is how I would move where the valves would seat . Miss my valve grinding equipment. Never did a large bore build before looking forward to seeing the process. Need to get ready for work i get up at 4am for work watch all my you tube buddies verse the news.you guys help jump start my day.

That's some good stuff there, I would love to learn how to do a 3 angle valve job someday... that would be so cool.

I do not have a deck height gauge, but from the days of being a tool and die maker have a nice set of depth mic's used; are you trying forcertain compression ratio ? looks like you did not need any barrrol shims. Nice working showing how to bolt the heads in, not sure if it matter someone told to put a light coat of STP on the head washer that gives you better readings ?? not sure if it matter.

You’re a clever dude, Jason. Just done all this with the deck height in my motor with a good friend who knows his stuff like you. Wish I’d found this video before we did it. Would have made much more sense! Ben 🇬🇧

J.W., I missed how you used your measurements....0475". I thought that told you how much to shim under cylinders. I must not understand why you did the deck height measurements. Sorry if I shoulda caught that. And thank you. Great job

lol... no worries brother that was a while ago. Hmmm all the deck height measurements were checked to make sure they were close enough to each other to avoid shimming. I would need to look it back up to be for sure but if I remember correctly I was good to go. You can always add shims to even out deck height as the closer they are to each other the better balanced the compression will be. With a 1641cc engine tolerance are pretty forgiving.

@@JWClassicVW really appreciate your quick answer. As I watched your next video many of my questions were answered. You measured deck height with feeler gauge, instead of the nut height (that you set barely touching top of piston). Then you added two 20 (mm or thousands of "). Then I began to understand. Nice to be able to replay video as much as you need. Right? Thank you again.
