VW Bus disc brake conversion

Brake time! I finally got tired of that mushy brake pedal and leaky wheel cylinders and picked up a fancy new disc brake kit. They call it a "no hassle" kit, and they were right! went together like a dream. I did have to do a little clearancing on the calipers, but other than that it fit perfectly. I’m putting this kit on my ‘66 Westy so watching this was helpful. I’m running 15” rims but the zero off set allowed for just a 2” narrowed beam to work.

looks like you have the calipers flips. Swap sides and the bleeder will be on the top.

Awesome video, just pulled my mom's 78 bus out of the garage, going to attempt to get it running. Any information an the wiring harness? I guess she paid someone to replace it years ago, he took it off and never finished the job, so now I'm stuck.

You can usually find the wiring diagrams online. Thesamba.com has a section on wiring harness installs with plenty of pics. Wolfsburgwest.com sells a nice factory correct harness with good instructions as well. Take your time and have fun with it! Thanks for watching!

I think you made a great choice. My question is about the brake bleeder. I bought it and used it on my bug. I had installed a whole new brake system, master and wheel cylinders. It didn’t work to well as it leaked a lot at the bleeder valve. Did you experience any of this? I wonder If there is nothing on the lines maybe it isn’t as effective?

I used it to bench bleed the master first, then used it to pull the fluid to each wheel. I did have a hard time getting suction at first. I replaced all of my bleeders with Russell speed bleeder and it seemed to work much better. They have a one way valve so you don't have to "crack" them to get them to work.

That kit looks nice. Shouldn't you have bled the brakes from the top bleeder screw on the calipers since air rises? Did you go back and re-bleed them? Cool video.

I did bleed them again, I had to replace a rear wheel cylinder that had an air leak.

I was thinking of doing all 4 wheels to disc brakes. Your reaction to just doing the front said it all. What offset for rims would be best for this set up?

This particular kit is designed for stock wheels. Anything that would fit your drum brakes will work fine!

I added a brake booster to my 68, and wow it is so much better. I can keep the stock drums and I have stronger brakes than most late bays. Nice job! What year bus do you have?

Mines a 66. No room for a booster on mine. These brakes make it stop a whole heck of a lot better though!
