I have a similar noise. It would have been helpful if the microphone and a second pair of ears had been inside the bus while driving around. I’m looking forward to clues about mine from your troubleshooting. Thanks for posting!

Since we are a conversion shop only (we do not do vehicle repairs or restoration work) we did not do any troubleshooting etc. The vehicle was converted for an out of state customer. Had we known about the issue ahead a time we would have recommended the transaxle be repaired prior to the conversion. Not sure it the owner bought the vehicle without an engine? So he may not have known about the issue either. Thank you for watching and I hope your transaxle issue is an easy repair.

Why did you keep the old shifter lever if all your forward / reverse selections are done via electric buttons on your dash facia ?

How much does this conversion cost? I have a 1977 VW Bus.

Sounds very much like a carrier bearing for transaxle. Weird…
