...food for thought; worked a VW van accident many years ago when I was an EMT, the van had these same pop-out windows...driver was impaled by the slide bar...transported with the bar through his left lung and exit through his back. He survived but with partial paralysis due to spinal cord damage.... There is certainly a cool factor with this mod and as always you do a fantastic DIY as with all your restores. I have learned many work-around techniques from watching your videos, this one can have consequences...

Looks fantastic to me brother. I don't understand why some people don't like the idea of frontal opening windshields. I mean, you can always close them as well and it's a wonderful experience to drive with them open. It's not as if you would open them all the way at interstate speeds while trailing a dump truck.

Mustie1... You're one blessed guy, I mean putting all your weight on glass without cracking it, balancing glass on top of your head without dropping it, throwing metal pieces on top of the dash without scratching it, it's like watching a magic show. Wish I had your luck. Love the video's, keep them coming.

I drove a bus from Munich to Copenhagen in July 1966. It had the safari windows, which we had open because the temperatures were in the 30s °C. After about 200 km we had so many bugs on our faces that we had to shut the windshield and live with the heat.

Many many years ago, when I was in High School in the early 70's, I broke the windshield in my 62 VW Bug. Went to an auto glass shop and they made me a new windshield while I waited. They used a masonite template of the windshield, traced it on a flat sheet of safety glass, scored it on both sides with a glass cutter. Can't remember if I paid $15 or $20 for the new windshield. Just a suggestion for your tinted bus window dilemma. Always enjoy your videos.

I would think that the talcum powder may dry out the rubber on those windows gaskets. I guess time will tell. I love these old buses, we had two of them when i was a kid and we went back and forth from Tucson Arizona to Grand Rapids Michigan every summer to beat the desert heat. It would take Mom 4 days to get us to Michigan and my Dad had very little vacation time so the gas pedal was on the floor the entire trip with the engines in both the '68 and the '74 (with an auto transmission and factory AC. Top speed on both was about 65 MPH full throttle, and I remember how the sound of that engine would lull me to sleep for hours, making the long trip less stressful with 5 kids in the bus with thick pads laid out on the floor for sleeping and room for everyone to stretch out. After the 3rd engine rebuild on the 74' dad bought Mom a Rabbit that she loved, especially the noticeable power increase when she put her foot in it lol. I love all of your videos buddy, is there really anything that you can't fix or bring back from the dead? Merry Christmas today if you are of a mind.

I'm a new subscriber, and just wanted to say that you have inspired me to take on a few projects that I may not have without the aid of your videos. I recently picked up a Generac 4000, electric start generator off Craig's List for $40. The seller said it wouldn't idle right and he was in the red on it and did not want to spend any money fixing it. I took a chance, disassembled, cleaned the carburetor, charged the battery, changed the oil and air filter, and it purrs like a kitten now. Great little machine. Don't worry, I'm in Colorado, no competition here, lol. Thank you for your videos. Keep them coming, they are much appreciated.

Thanks for the video and well done job ! While watching it came to my my mind that I once used a strapping method to hold a wooden frame firmly together, while the glue cured. It was the simple and cheap pallet strapping approx ½" wide and a nylon lock. I always save a couple of these straps and locks as they are useful for all kinds of things. So, if you ever run into this kind of work again you may try this method. All the best -

We did the same project (safari install) on our 67 bus by installing an internal floating threaded plate with oversize holes at the body shell. That allows for adjustment somewhat. By the way, just about all the safari window seals on the market SUCK. They pucker in the corners, and leak regardless of how well your safaris are installed. It's part of the experience, but on a nice day, running with them open is awesome.
@SUBDUB676 жыл бұрын
Hi Mustie, my Safaris leak from time to time, spoke to a guy that does these and he has drilled small drain holes where the safari frame sits, then has a hose to drain down through the floor and onto the ground...might be worth considering, otherwise just make windows close harder 😉

1967 is the only year which the VW Safari bus does equipped with both 12 volt electrical system but the last year of folding split windshield. For 1966, VW Karmann Ghia does came with 12 volt electrical system. It came with a coupe and convertible forms for 1966 VW Karmann Ghia. Also in 1967, VW Safari Bus is the last year that used Porsche style headlights. For 1968, VW Bus, and Westfalia Campers uses the new body shell, and the changes includes: 1). Glass cover over sealed beam headlights eliminated, 2). One piece windshield, 3). Two speed windshield wiper system, 4). Dual brake system, 5). Redesigned steering wheel is more padded; spokes are dished shape for safety, 6). Collapsible steering column, 7). Dashboard is redesigned and padded, 8). One piece front and rear bumpers, bows and Over riders eliminated; bumper length shortened slightly, and 9). Bigger windows for better visibility, and 10). Single sliding side door replaced swing out double door. For 1968 VW Type 2, pick up trucks, and panel van are also available.

Great video Daren they look great and don't lol to much different but after watching all your bids I think you will be looking for a matching pair. hi musti, i have been working for Carglass (a automotive glass replacement company in Europe) and can tell you you can make a template of your window 1-1 on cardboard and have a new layered safety window made, especially since the bus has flat glass, my hunch would be that the window you took out without a logo or markings were made that way. keep up the good work !

Hi Mustie. Just a quick mention that the radio antenna is designed to have a given length. You could measure the the length of the original one and trim the one down you created if it is significantly longer. It has to do with the wavelength of the frequencies it is supposed to receive..
