I have never used a sealer on these windows, and never had a problem with them leaking. However after seeing this video, I think it's a good idea to use the sealer, as an added insurance. Thank you for the video.

I never used a sealer, just vaseline. Just like Vw use to recomend. Used a string around the outside, had someone to apply pressure on the outside of the glass while i pulled the string. Super quick less than 2 min., and never had a leak. I installed a lot of windshields in VWs for other people as well as mine.

When I worked in boat building when we had a messy job like this we would double and sometimes triple glove in order to take off a dirty one and have a clean one for the remaining work. The one closest to the skin was taped to our long sleeve shirt.

Lookin' good ! I've done this job many times on kombi's. My 2c worth is you don't need the silicon, it makes a big mess, makes it hard to get the window in far enough and to pull on the string, but worse, the chemistry of silastic requires air to cure properly and 48hrs... Under the rubber here, it remains uncured, porous and traps water, undermining the seal and is promoting rust. IF the metal lip is not good just use some high temperature bearing grease...that will make the window go in super easy AND will fix any gaps on rubber to metal and stop the rust ...win, win, win yeah? My other cent is your mate on the outside does not have to be shy about it...make a fist and bash that glass inwards at the point you pull the string, you can even use a rubber hammer, its safety glass and tough, that is why at end it was out of whack. ON a small side window, no problem but if this was a windscreen on a Bay?....you'd be screwed, it would not be inside enough AND it would not be aligned in the corner, and you would NOT be able to push it sideways, - that is how they break. So don't be shy, bash the bastard. Anyway LOVE THE COLOR and love your rotisserie !!!! and pile of dead metal on the floor that you'd replaced with new !!!! Have a ball with it ! Cheers Ex Kombi Pete

This is a poly seal specifically designed for auto glass. It is the modern equivalent of what VW used at the factory in 1959. It is easy to remove from the paint when replacing glass. Thanks for the other tips.

"high temperature bearing great" !! You never ever put petroleum based grease on rubber. It deteriorates rubber very fast. Silicone based, maybe. Dishwashing detergent works fine. :-)

You really should answer some of the questions here. What seal mfg? What 3M sealer? What is the wire/line size? Important stuff imo.

There is no trouble replacing windows with the proper sealant. This is polyurethane for auto glass.

never heard about uzing glue (sorry dont know the English translation for the stuff you use) (in dutch its called kit...) on those rubbers? i had the idea it was watertight by the pressure it gets getting mounted and being clamped??. or is t just a precausion? your VW is looking nicer everytime! nice job!

@addagwenlyn96628 жыл бұрын
+MrBugsier5 Oh yes, it's best to use a sealer on those rubber gaskets. Otherwise over time moisture could work it's way around it. Temperature changes cause expansion and contraction of the seal. Especially with harsh climate change from season to season like we experience here in most of the Mid, to Northern United States.
