VW Cabriolet front strut replacement

Replacing the front strut inserts on a 1993 VW Cabriolet. This would be the same for all A1 VWs and very similar to A2 cars.

Nice video! Thank you! Is there a particular brand of shock insert you'd recommend? Also, would you use oil-filled or gas-filled shocks? My '92 Cabriolet will only be used around town. Thank you again! Jim

I always get gas shocks or struts if possible. They usually don't cost much more.

I am pretty sure they were KYB, it has been a while since I did this video. I am going to be doing the rears soon and I got KYB's for them.

@@patharris4783 I've recently bought Hilka Spring compressors (UK £20) took my suspension off last week, took off the coil spring to replace, as it failed the MOT on that - gutted. New one has arrived & will i be changing it within the next days.

Would you recommend wire wheeling and painting the lower interior spring housing to aid in rust prevention? I have both undercoating and bedliner to use in various places in my Cabby, I wondered if maybe a coat of the rubberized undercoating would help it.

If it were mine I would clean and paint. I am a little skeptical of rubberized undercoating.

Do you know how freely should the hat be moving? Cause if i over tighten the nut above the hat it causes the hat to stop spinning.

It should turn freely. I think there needs to be a washer on top of the strut rod maybe. It has been a long time since i did this video.

I am pretty sure I got these on eBay. You can do a vehicle specific search and they normally have quality brands and free shipping.

What was the brown goo or glue you put on bolts? Didn't quite hear it?

Probably anti seize compound. I like to put that on suspension parts or things that might get rusty in case you ever have to take it apart again. It is typically copper or silver in color.
