VW Camper engine problems - Can I fix it?

I take a look at the engine in this lovely 1970s Volkswagen Type 2 Camper to see if I can get it to run right. It won't idle properly, is sluggish to pick up, is down on power and is generally very unhappy. Let's see if I can change that?

It's a battle but a fun one.. Good luck with the house hunting. You'll have to check out the local motor factors too to see if they live up to DT motors.

Get a remote starter switch and attach to starter. Run a wire from + gen/alt post to pos side of coil. Turn on lights. Removes need to go up to front of bus. Saves a metric $hit ton of time.

Hi Ross, Have you ruled out stale fuel? Is the bus has sat for some time the petrol can degrade and give the rough running symptoms you have. I would also replace the condenser while you have the points out, just to rule that out as well. Good luck with the house move! 🤞

It wasn't that long since it was last used. Plus, looking at what was in the float bowl, I've no reason to believe the fuel is bad. I'll be replacing the condenser for sure. Thanks!

My MG wouldn't idle and I found the points gap was way too small, It would be worth checking fella, cheers..

I'm going to be replacing the points as part of the process of sorting out the ignition system in general, so when I do that, I'll be gapping them correctly. Thanks!

@@Endfloat Cool, Yeah it ran ok but died when I took my foot off the gas, she idles perfect now after gapping them correctly, cheers and good luck with the move..

Coil? Seemed to get worse the longer you had it on. Then was a touch better after carb clean so maybe coil cooled a bit? Those plugs are odd too never seen that in an air-cooled vw but I've never seen a mex engine.
