Man, thanks so much for this. Took apart one of my inner CVs on my '01 S4 and when I put it back together it just kept binding. Took it apart 3 or 4 times, and every time same result. I marked the flange side of all the components with a marker before disassembly so was confused what the issue could be. The relative position of the inner and outer race (big hump to small hump) was something I didn't consider, and that was the problem. Saved me from having to take off the other side and deal with all of that mess just to compare to a known good. Thanks again.

Bought a new inner joint, fully built, and the balls and it didnt move at all. I've never done this before, but something was wrong i thought. So i had to use a hammer to turn the cage to put grease in it....hope i didnt destroy it. Going out to the garage to check if it came from the factory wrongly built, as i suspect it did. If so, this vid is a life saver before i install it to the axle today :D

I took my joint apart to clean and got inner and outer correct but the middle cage... I did not realize it was directional. I got it back together but it had a very annoying vibration under hard acceleration. Was going to buy a new axle because it has some other issues and is a cheap China axle from auto parts store. This fixed my vibration. I have done many of these and I’m afraid to admit I had gotten very lucky. Right up until doing it on my own car in my own garage. Go figure.

The outside line that you say that goes to the wheel, in SFK VKJC5151 (VW T4) goes to the axle, I have to check the original one. Also the cage, the flat side goes inside instead outside

Different videos give different info.. Others say the inner race with the hump, as you were calling it, goes outward, away from axle, you say towards axle??
@carlosz7208 Жыл бұрын
I saw many videos and threads on thesamba.com and came to the conclusion that the chamfered/hump side goes towards the axle. It’s been working for me. Maybe it varies from vehicle to vehicle.
@targabill Жыл бұрын
@@carlosz7208 Just wondering is there a specific reason? Does it do something?

@@targabill I think the C-clip that holds the CV to the axle shaft may have clearance issues if installed the same side as the raised/chamfered/hump part.

Great and detailed video! As far as tapered edge of the cage, it should always go toward the axle but the raised edge of the spider gear should go against trust washer but I have seen some aftermarket axles where the spider gear's raised edge goes toward the transmission (circlip was installed on that end) - they didn't even use the thrust washer. What is your opinion to it?
@carlosz7208 Жыл бұрын
To be honest I’ve only rebuilt my vw CVs once and they’re still doing well after 15k miles. There was an extra washer in my kit but didn’t use it. Can remember why, think it was for a different bug CV.

We coudnt figure it out until now. Thanks! Would i be able to pjt it back together with the inner part installed on the axle or do i have to remove the C Clip and inner part? Thanks again inadvance.
@carlosz72083 жыл бұрын
Hi Krispy, thanks for the support. I’d think you’d have to remove the entire cv from the axle to rebuild, easier than trying to assemble while on the axle. The axle will obstruct the cage and inner part from lining up when assembling.

@a.c.e.75682 жыл бұрын
So the "FLAT" side goes to the transmission flange and the "RAISED" side goes towards the driveshaft to the CV joint at the wheel. A bit confusing because at 0:57 you say the side with the line (the FLAT side) goes to the wheel or the flange.
@carlosz72082 жыл бұрын
There are two different bodies, same thing but one has a single line and no line. The other one has 3 lines and 1 line. Maybe something to do with different manufacturers
@a.c.e.75682 жыл бұрын
@@carlosz7208 Well my inner CV joints do not have any line at all. They are original and off my Porsche 911 (993). But I did know about the narrow and wide tabs. I just wasn't sure which side the side with a raised edge (on the splined part) goes to and I also noted some rebuilds showing the beveled edge which all makes sense for shaft clearance.

Great video. I’m planning on attempting this repair on my mk4 golf. Are both the inner and out part of the axle rebuildable? I’m getting a lot of shaking during acceleration only. My motor mounts n front end r new so my axles must be the problem as they’re 21 yrs old. I don’t wanna spend $600 on good ones so I’m thinking about rebuilding them. Any advice. Thx in advance
@carlosz72082 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I’m not a mechanic and have only done these on my vw bus once. They’re used as hell (40+years old) but were still usable. Check for excessive wear. All my cv’s were the same so it didn’t matter which side (wheel/tranny) it went on. Yours are probably similar but double check on that just in case. Make sure to buy good grease and boots.
