Before removing the flywheel, is it a good idea to check endplay to see if the thrust is still in spec?
@DragRacingTV2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, if you are going to split the case you'll find out what if anything could cause endplay issues. If you aren't going to split the case it's a bit more complicated, because you don't know if the end play was set correctly to begin with, for instance it's an engine that was in a car that you bought. What I like to do is grab the pulley on an old and well-used assembled engine and see if it moves in and out, in other words if the thrust bearing area is pounded out you'll see endplay slop at the pulley, without even pulling the engine out of the vehicle.

i was told do not use a clicker ,,,,they are not safe and accurate enough for vw , use the needle tork wrench , thanks nice vid always learning
@slayercft8 жыл бұрын
+MrGarcon98 the "clicker" is a torque wrench
@MrGarcon988 жыл бұрын
+slayercft i know you missed the meaning of my comment . when using a torque wrench that clicks is not as acurate as a torque wrench with a pointer , specially for heads . even the book says it .
@slayercft8 жыл бұрын
MrGarcon98 Ohhh I see now, I'm sorry I misunderstood. I only have the beam type and an electronic. I didn't know the click type were that inaccurate. Good to know!
@MrGarcon988 жыл бұрын
+slayercft here is the thing ! if you torque the heads and your using a clicker that is not accurate when the motor gets hot and expands if the heads are too tight , disaster can happen like striping studs and etc etc. have fun i am 63 i just wanna ride more then work on them anymore LOL >

Not true. Click type of torque ranch is very reliable and used in all automotive industry. If you want to spend extra money and have something fancy that works, buy Snap On digital torque ranch. Don't use needle unless you're doing inch pound reading. Do your own research

where is your shop located? how much will you charge to rebuild my dual port 1600cc engine? it has busted pistons and metal debris in the oil

There seems to be some various opinions about what is the correct torque for the two different sizes of head bolt/nuts. i.e. there are 8mm and 10 mm bolts. What is the correct torque for these two sizes. The link in one reply just has 23 lb ft for cylinder heads. ???
@DragRacingTV8 жыл бұрын
+DG Carlson good question, they are indeed different, i think that these torque specs should reflect the info that is in the factory Bentley manual www.hotvws.com/content.php?contentID=62

Ey, what can you get for a rebuild 1600? I mean case linebored new bearings, new cilinders, pistons and heads new oil cooler and all sheet metal cleaned/painted :)
@frank09busa7 жыл бұрын
MrPyroBomb $1000-1500 at best. Unless performance parts installed with paperwork, you can ask up to 5k

Are all your procedures basically the same for a 1300 engine?
@DragRacingTV9 жыл бұрын
+DG Carlson Things like lapping valves, checking for cracks in the case, hanging rods, etc. should apply to all Type 1 engines. Differences would be most noticeable in areas like the oil galley size vs. oil cooler selection/installation, because it's a bit complex. I don't have enough 1300cc experience to comment on much more than that, so be sure and reference the Bentley service manual.

Don't get your panties in a bunch, lol, that engine was junk... Mike clearly stated that he knew the previous owner, who had run it low on oil several times, and basically abused it badly. It's not financially viable to do things like repair cracked heads, and re-use worn-out jugs/pistons. Even the engine case itself wears out, as these videos show.
