The LED lights are pulse-width-modulated. This means they turn on and off at a certain frequency. The camera just happened to capture it when the LED is on and when it is off.

If you look at our other films, we only mention MPG claims if either a. We experienced a certain MPG from our own driving or b. We were provided MPG data from US EPA. While we did get our own figures on this car, it has yet to be tested by US EPA. The 56 MPG claim is based on the European Cycle - which is different than US ratings . . .

I would love to see this car in North America, for everyday driving you get better fuel economy but you don't sacrifice to much speed, its also built very well

Forgot to bring up the Golf R business case again. VW looked at that as a 'small dedicated' group and planned only 5000 units for a two year US run. They ended up selling that many in one year. I would be interested to see if the same case could be made for a MK VII GTD.

The question here was not whether they would bring the MK VI over but a GTD version of the MK VII. As far as quality, have to politely disagree with you. This car is head and shoulders above other cars available in the same segment and even better than the Mexican built VWs.

I know I'm 2 years late, but I just wanted to mention the Mk6 GTD was sold here in Australia for $39,290. The GTi was $40,490. So the GTD was $1200 cheaper.

I say bring it over! Most VW cars that I see on the road that has a liftgate, are diesel. And the reason that I didn't buy a MKVI GTI is because of the sub 40mpg fuel mileage. And the reason I didn't buy the MKVI Golf TDI is because of the subpar performance and because it's not made in Germany (just like my MKIV GTI, which was made in Brazil). The GTD combines these two very important facets to form the perfect GTI!

You're Right MotoMan! As excellent as this car is built we Americans are going to say I can buy a Dodge Charger RT with a Hemi, or a New Mercedes CLA, or a Nissan Path Finder, and it will be such a small dedicated to VW and or people with money that don't care for big cars. Interesting how this plays out.

MotoMan, for your survey ... Yes yes yes... bring the GTD to the USA. I agree with your concern about cost and other options like the Audi; however the GTD does not have the same "mission statement" as say the A3 or other $30K choices. The GTD has a sporty fun to drive element that goes well beyond that of an A3. Yes I could purchase a used Porsche Cayman but then I would not meet my efficient travel needs (with fun on the way). Yes bring the GTD to the USA ... ASAP :) Thanks

I would definitely consider it. The trade-off in off-the-line performance and fuel efficiency would be worth it to me. Now if the thing were to run $35K USD or more then it would probably not be worth it to me. As mentioned, there are some very fine cars in that price bracket.

As far as torque goes, just get an APR stage 1 tune on the GTI. With the tune the GTI absolutely CRUSHES the GTD in the torque department with 317 lbs./ft. And it has 92 more hp than the GTD at 260 hp. If you drive with a light foot you can easily get 30-33 mpg combined. Drive aggressively and you'll get around 25-27 mpg. No brainer which is better. I'd give my left nut for the Green color found on this GTD though.

Ur absolutely right. That car at that price would never sell here. Americans want BIG for that. It's too small. Great mpg, but what's the payoff for the premium? Probably 100k miles or so. 25k, however u gotta get it there, and it's a slam dunk. Thanks for the video. I've been waiting for info on this car since 2012. I've since bought a 2014 Mazda 6. But I envy that GTD

Something you reporters and most non-diesel American drivers don't get... The price of diesel vs gas is a moot point. I still save $100's per year driving a TDI over a 5-cyl gas Jetta (same performance) even though diesel costs more. Granted, diesel drivers tend to buy for the long-term. A GTI driver will ask if it's worth buying a new (GTD) or just buy a cheaper used sporty hatchback. A diesel driver will say, woah! about time we get the GTD. I'd buy it new and drive it for at least 10 years.

Unfortunately I don't think it would do well here in the states as it seems VW is putting out so many style options of golf (gas, diesel, and electric). That being said I think if VW supported an premium aftermarket for the TDI where you could build a GTD that might fit better for enthusiasts..

yes bring it ! I 'm currently in the market debating either a GTI or Diesel golf , this would solve the issue , case done -I would buy one today . ( in a manual 4 dr ) what you stated I agree , In Maryland , diesel costs average 0- 15% more than 89 gasoline - however your milage averages 10-20% better Depending on driving habits - the costs more (yes) that said I buy a car and keep it much like the europeans , as my current vehicles are a 84 vw westy ..over time I believe that the diesel would have benefits paying for itself over the gasoline power plant - also the Golf itself is a quality eco box that you'd keep for 10-15 yrs at least unlike other eco boxes that fall apart in the third year - anyway thats my logic -

The new GTi now has the same amount of torque @258. If VW were to bring this GTD to the USA it would need to be more powerful but that might cost more and get less MPG.

That is subjective. People often only refer to published or peak numbers. Big mistake! The rpm and rpm range where the torque/hp is applied and carries across is often more important that peak numbers themselves. Kind of like a big picture vs a small picture perspective.

Isn't the Euro-market GTI/GTD loaded up with optional goodies not offered in the North American version (adaptable suspension, blind spot warning)? Even my top-of-the-line, German-built $42,000 VW CC VR6 Executive is "de-contented" compared to the version offered in Germany. I believe with sensible option manipulation and the lower Mexican labor & production, VW should be able to offer the GTD in N. America for GTI prices.

MotoMan, you intentionally did NOT mention the 56 MPG sticker VW has on the GTD. We "Americans" who buy VW ARE NOT the same ones who buy hog-SUV's. I trade in my Jetta hybrid in an INSTANT for the GTD!! I went TDI (2012 Passat) & am on a Jetta hybrid...BAD MISTAKE!!! BAD MISTAKE!!! I should have gone traded my wrecked passat for the SAME CAR: A TDI. Fuel prices? Dude! have seen the price of super unleaded? That's what the GTI calls for, DUH!

Fair enough, not a stripper in the truest sense, but as a car guy would you really want a C250 over a GTI/GTD? Everything I've read has said the C-Class really isn't worth the bother unless you get the V6. Personally I wouldn't. Full disclosure, I bought a CPO MkV GTI last June, fully loaded at $25k. There was no financial reason keeping me away from a CPO BMW/Merc/Audi, but I've honestly never read anything good about an "affordable" one. The GTI though, always top of it's class.

The GTI is way more expensive than the GTD in Germany. Usually german cars are sold 25 to 40 percent cheaper in the US (which I don't understand, given the fact that americans earn 25 percent more than germans). Should be 25 Grand in the US. The reason for buying a GTD rather than a GTI is not the prices for leded or diesel, it should the fact that the fuel consumption is almost 40 percent less in the GTD in comparison to the GTI...
@MotoManTV
@MotoManTV 12 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind that US$35,000 would buy you a modestly equipped Mercedes C250. Yes, a different car type but certainly not a stripper.

I know that VW is all about "world domination" right now , but I believe that if they were to bring the GDI over it would not do well in the states. VW is doing very well at the moment offering 13 models in the states.Instead of bringing the GDI over VW needs to consolidate and focus on the range they offer now. I hate to use this as a business example, Apple:Music, Phones, Computers, & Tablets. No dilution of the brand. Each a success b/c they are the main focus. Lastly, new Phaeton please.

Moto Man has no idea what he's talking about. The GTD is like 30k euros in Germany, he must be including taxes in his price. The Mark VII GTD is def coming to America (VW's biggest market) and it will be made in Puebla to keep the cost down. This car will cost about the same as a GTI, not $35k! Moto Man needs to focus more on researching his vids and less on those stupid hankerchiefs. Not a serious automotive journalist.

I love my Jetta Sport Wagon TDI. Unfortunately it looks like the new models require AddBlue. AddBlue is an amonia based diesel exhaust additive which cleans emissions before they leave the tailpipe. Oh well. The torque makes the diesels fun to drive. If I really want to have fun I can use launch control in sport mode. Fuel mileage sucks when you accelerate fast. GTD??? OK some people might like it. But what America really needs is the new 7 speed DSG transmaission. My 6 speed DSG is awesome so 7 speeds would mean better performance and better mileage. If you love a stick shift you will love DSG. DSG is basically an automatic stick shift. You can shift manually in sport mode but you do not need to step on a clutch. What is not to love?

Did you watch the video? It's $56k in Europe and would be about $35k here. The new Mk7 GTI with those same options is $35k here (including performance pack that's $1,100)...so throw in the TDI and it's Golf R turf. Who'd buy this over an R? 500 really in-the-know people.

VW has to leave the electronic gadgetry OFF the car and keep it simple. All I want is HID headlights. You can keep the back up camera and all that other stuff for the incompetent drivers. What is the point of power seats if there is one driver? After you set the seat position once you are done. If you knew how to set your side mirrors you would not need blind spot sensors. It would be nice if there was "chinese menu" options instead of "package" options. More aerodynamics and less gadgetry
