VW Golf GTI Clubsport S - Likes and Dislikes

After 6 months with my Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S, I thought I would make a video discussing a few of the things that I like and dislike about it.

I also have a Clubsport S and actually like the feel of "airiness" behind your head and the tyre noise that comes from the rear of the car - it adds character in my humble opinion! I can't actually fault the car and am also fortunate enough to have a GT4 as its stable mate and in many ways the CS-S is as good as the GT4 and definitely for the money even better. The dry weather grip is totally astonishing and the way the car seams to pivot mid corner is incredible ... I just wish all the speculators would dissapear so the cars sit purely with enthusiasts like yourself ... keep up the good work ;)

Thanks Andrew, there aren't many cars I don't worry about depreciation with but (at the moment) the Clubsport S is different as I just get such a buzz from driving it, even just looking at in the garage. I know it will take me years to learn its ways and eventually I will have to take it on track to feel the magic but it's all these things I can look forward to doing over the months and years ahead that make a special bond - the exhaust noises don't do any harm either!

Hello, I love the clubsport S interior, and I would like to make a replica interior in my Gti, so do anyone know about the parts number of the separation net in the trunk and the rear strut bar ?!!!

Had a couple of 84 rabbit Gti's as a kid. Finally have a 16 autobahn edition with Clark seats coming. Your vid and manner are really helpful.

Hi mate...interesting video... i have an amazing stage 2 3dr ed30...and i had a mint mk4 anniversary before that... i love the fact that the mk7 CSS has the nurburgring record.... but.... i will still get the mk7 r with the dsg in the next few months...as in the real world it will be quicker... especially once ive modded it, stage 2, brakes, lsd, tbe, coilovers etc...as it will be able to put the power down better... it will be a giant killer..... but i still love the mk7 CS S... shame about the parking sensors though... i assume the engine in the mk7 CS S is the same engine as the mk7 r right?

Good Video. Any reason why the tailpipes seem to be pointed up a small bit ?, is it just for appearance . Any videos of the Golf R mk7 in depth look or a likes/dislike (like you did in the Clubsport S) ?. Love your videos really interesting keep up the good work .

Thanks for your comments, they make me motivated to do more videos! I think a Mk7 R video would be a good idea too so it's on the list, thanks. Regarding the tailpipes, I would assume it's just for looks as can't think of another reason

Thanks for commenting. It's hard to say what will happen with prices. Hype vs number of cars for sale is very good for keeping prices up as 150 UK cars some of which have already been exported isn't a lot. Just a shame that so many put them up for sale, around 10% have been for sale over the last 9 months - VW UK need to take extra car when allocating cars next time (if there is a next time) - actually that's a good point - VW do appreciate the GTI these days, new Polo & Up! are imminent but will they do a Mk7.5 Clubsport S? Doubt it, suspect Mk8 Edition 45 will be at least part electric so Mk7 CSS could quite easily be a high water mark.

It's tricky, if you are a GTI fan the Clubsport S is the holy grail but sometimes you just want something that feels a bit more special all of the time and Porsches do tick that box. A 2009 Gen 2 987 Boxster is a great weekend car but for many its too impractical so a GTI is a good substitute. I suppose I broke my own rule of having a car too similar to what I experience every day as my weekend car. 5/6/8/10 cylinders should be the minimum entry requirement :)

Nice....Did you ever do a review of the one-off MK5 golf W12?....There was one in a PVW-Mag a few years back, black with an orange lip round the edge of the wheel....I think it was around 500bhp....a beast by all accounts....You look a bit like Morten Harket from "Ah-Ha" without a hat on lol:)....

Did someone build a W12? VW built one and I think Clarkson drove it on Top Gear, rear engined. I think it was more Mk6 than Mk5 though at the front. From what I can remember it was a pig to drive with all that weight in the back!

Its from a January-2007-Edition of Golf+ Mag and it was basically a concept car to launch the ED:30....They named it the "R-GTI: 400BHP" "340+lb/ft of torque, and was designed by the masters at APR & Tuningwerkes. VW has/had (at the time) no plans to put this into production even though it it did 0-60 in just 4.8 secs....If I had an up to date phone I' put a pick on. I suppose in comparison it looks very similar in style & performance to todays MK7 Edition 40 you reviewed, it was very post-modern....Check out google-images, theres a few pics on there. It has a large lower-grill with red-rimmed wheels, you can't miss it. Thats all there appears to be on it....:)....

Just bought a Clubsport and loving it, it's a non S and has none of the dislikes, I have fitted PS4S tyres (best road tyre available), short shift kit and Engine mount, on the plus side my road noise is small and I have a reverse camera ;-) o and a spare wheel. I would recommend trying a booma racing short shift mount. I think the S has a better engine mount as standard, do you get wheel hop ? Also with VCDS you can turn off nanny mode( it imposes a torque restriction) so you get full power in 2nd (they did this to stop wheel hop), it drives so much nicer having all the power when you want, that transformed my Clubsport. The rest of my spec is S spec, 3 door, bucket seat manual, a great bit of kit. I did want the S but don't feel short changed now as 2nd hand values see the CS as amazing value(£10k cheaper 2nd hand now), Plus I needed a 4 seater car, my final mod will be to fit the CSS hubs to give me the same camber on the S, bar that they are the same car. I would def check the VCDS (torque restriction) on yours to see if they have still put it in nanny mode, but as you have a better engine mount standard they might have given the CSS the full monty from the get go. Try the boomaracing short shift I think you will like it and it fits in 10 minutes and only 1 clip, it was £100.

Thanks for the advice, haven't noticed wheel hop. CSS has alloy subframe, CS has steel plus DCC is standard on CSS (do you have that?) and like the Cup 2 tyres is key part of its identity (but unlike PS4S they are don't work below 7 degrees) The exhaust noise is massively different on CSS but presumably a map will make CS do this (and give CSS power). I agree CS is great value secondhand but finding one with the perfect spec (at least buckets & DCC) is not easy when I last had a look. Both great cars!

I was very lucky to find a car 2nd hand in 3 door/manual/buckets.Going off Cup 2 , I have them on 2 cars and the road noise is dire, PS4S is the best road tyre out there today so my other 2 cars now have these. I prob fit the CSS hubs but not the subframe. come winter you will be hunting for other tyres lol or a set of winter wheels, I'll run PS4s all year round.

Driver Perfection Hi im also a Clubsport owner! Have you guys heard that this engine should have a problem with a Stage 1 tune? Ijust read it on another video today. I noticed that the Turbocharger unit gets incredibly HOT after just a few minutes of racing, did you notice too? Igot a neighbour whos dealin wth cars & repair em & he say its a good idea to let engine be on for few minutes after racing it, so all parts kind of "gets in place" before shuttin of abruptly. Alsociv read that its possible to buy a blanket for your Turbocharger (made of spefial material) that you wrap around the turbo - to lead out heat. Its said to be one of the best remedys for getting rid of the heat in hard core racing...

Come on Mister, don’t be a snow-flake over paint work. Wash it yourself with lots of water (and a sponge). The grit lorry with f*** your paintwork. I’m on my second GTI and I am just glad my bum has not been shunted by idiots on mobile phones in traffic (as happened twice previously with my two Honda Jazzes....no I am not lying). Love your videos though.
