It’s time for a hot hatch vs performance SUV drag race!
Now you might be looking at this line-up and thinking it’s a pointless race. However, once we delve a bit deeper at the specs, you’ll see this race might be a bit closer than you thought!
Starting off with the Golf R, it’s powered by a 2-litre 4 cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that can deliver 320hp & 420Nm of torque. It’s relatively light, too, weighing in at 1,550kg.
Then we have the Audi, which has double the number of cylinders under the bonnet, where it houses a 4-litre twin-turbo V8 that puts down 507hp and 770Nm of torque. It’s also oh-so-much heavier than the Golf, tipping the scales at 2,250kg!
So sure, the Audi has way more power, but it’s also 700kg heavier! And more importantly, while the Golf will set you back £40,000, it’s only half the price of the Audi! So is it worth paying so much more for that extra power? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

Small suggestion: Film the brake test with a drone, it makes it clearer to see which car wins

I believe they are filming on or near an active airfield, so that would mean they'd need permission from the CAA (FAA) every single time they do a brake test. They've probably thought about it, but probably concluded with it being way too impractical.

@@Nordlicht05 Still, all that weight helps them put their power down, and with traction control, an auto gearbox, and AWD, they put almost ALL their power down, save for parasitic loss. Fast SUV's are a force to be reckoned with for straightline stuff on the street. I regularly get into arguments with SUV fanbois about their ability to corner however, a favorite pastime of mine :P lightness and size will always be the most important thing to me

SQ7 (7 seater) 0 60 mph in 3.5 secs (motortrend, car and driver) Golf R 0 60 mph 4.2 (at the best) In real world (all with launch control of course) the little golf has no chance. I ve even read that people with stock SQ7 removed third row, and with ceramic brakes and minimum fluids and gas got ad low as a 3.3 seconds on the 0-60 mph. Bonkers

Hey Matt, quick pilot tip. Most runways have black, box-like, “signs” on both sides of the runway with bold white numbers … These denote the length of runway left. For example, “6” would mean 6,000ft left, “2” would mean 2,000ft left, etc. Hope this will help you judge your runway remaining distances in the future for safer racing.

wrong. all stock. bad times today as weather was bad. SQ7 did a 12.5 before on this channel and golfs done a 12.3. The Stock Mk8 r's have been dyno'd around 340-350hp and all do around a 12.3 in ideal situations. My Mk 8 does consistent 12.3-5s on real roads and i havent modded it. Trading in for new rs3 tho :)

An interesting quarter mile test would be if both cars had a stage 1 tune, meaning the ecu is delimited and performance optimized. I think the SQ7 would become an absolute monster fully delimited.

Just gonna say that I am intimately familiar with the 2020 SQ7, with ours currently at 15,xxx miles. Getting ready for another 1500 mile road trip this weekend for my father's birthday! The look on the Coyote 5.0 Mustang owners faced as he got taken to Gapplebees by a 5500lb+ SUV pulling a motorcycle trailer with my KTM on it... XD
