manwithavan Diesels are becoming a bit silly really. Sales reps flying up the motorways in their TDI Audis and 320d BMWs. All pretending they have a sports car because they can sit at 100 all day with no effort. Low emissions, tax reasons and fuel economy are the only reasons they get them as company cars. Ive had a couple of diesels in my time, but ive grown up and learned that they are no good for most people. If turbos were not fitted to car diesel engines, nobody would buy them because they would be too slow, and that takes me back to my earlier point. The sooner attitudes change the better. Hybrids will be the norm for executive cars eventually until the next stage in automotive propulsion development. In the meantime, get a petrol. Smoother, quieter, more fun.

I agree with other folk. This test at least has one sensible component: the GTI vs GTD. It would have been closer with the non p.p. GTI. However the GTD scores not as a drag weapon but as an efficient A/B road cruiser. It would have been more informative to do a proper road comparison between these two.

The keyword '(new)' hints to Top Gear after they had that problem sometime ago. My point is, the (new) Top Gear uploads gets noticeably more and more bland with the absence of Clarkson, Hammond, and May videos. Of course I could still watch their new show on Amazon, but as a loyal viewer of Top Gear for years, I really want them to upload interesting stuffs, and keep these kind of things in their magazine. there is not more power loss in dsg than in a manual transmission. that is the huge advantage over automatic gearboxes that are using torque converters which are causing a power loss ;)

Here’s a thought that probably hasn’t came up in these comments: This is exactly why I chose the 2017 GTI S base, with no lsd, instead of getting the 2017 GTI PP with the lsd (and some other small pointless things like bigger brakes), because as you can see in this video, the GTI w/PP got demolished by the R. Those who buy the GTI w/PP somehow think they are so much better and faster because of the PP. If you want to be fast, just get the R. Having my GTI S model is fine without the lsd, and doesn’t really make me that much slower. For the cost of the PP I was like screw that. Not worth it. If VW offered to get the lsd on its own, I would’ve, but they don’t, and only offered it in higher trims, which was too expensive in terms of value per performance, so I didn’t get it. Having the lsd is cool, but it doesn’t make you the fastest, as you can see in this video.
