As a former software engineer my intuition tells me that VW Group has such poor software because they have adopted a massively flawed architecture. This has likely come from ignorant managers not hiring or ignoring experts and making uninformed decisions early in the analysis of needs. Software is easy - it takes attention to detail, ruthless honesty, exhaustive testing and time to produce reliable, performant software. Given VW Group's responses to the software crises I doubt that they are honest or test software exhaustively.

I couldn't agree with you more. I also work in software development. In my experience the issues start with managers (at all levels) that don't consult or listen to the software engineers in the beginning. Then the whole project becomes a fire fight to get 'something' out of the door.

Sounds just about right. Here on #KZbin you can ride along with quite a few people that are testing Tesla's Beta system and they get the improved upgrade and they will tell you what was wrong and flawed with the past software and what is better with the upgrade. I don't see any other EV company doing that. They may have a few in the house people driving their FSD. But no doubt they will not all encounter the many different things and obstacles and conditions like the Multitude of Beta Tesla drivers . And all these drivers reporting back to Tesla the good and the bad. ..................... And... I would love to see VW getting rid of Herbert Diess, come back and bite them in the ass. LoL 🙏 Like Mr. DIESS Said, Tesla is a moving target 💨🎯 I am also hoping Tesla will hire Mr. Herbert Diess . 🤞

This is my experience. Senior managers want to accelerate the transition from vague marketing concept to detailed coding. At the cost of a comprehensive system design specification stage.

I agree that it comes from management mostly, but I would add that mostly because they are people which works with cars for decades, Tesla don't have experience, so take hardware (which is important) as startup, and mostly not for cars. As they using AMD, Nvidia (which was design for cars) and Intel. So normal x86 architecture for entertainment system. Next thing is how you approach to roadmap, and I bet VW go with waterfall, even if they would say teams are Agile, they should start from small team to make prototype and build on it, building team in same time, but they put billions and many people at start so... nobody knows what is to do, so better not do much because this way nobody say you screw.

Moodys gives a higher credit rating based on how many models a company claims they will make. If Tesla said they would have 5,000 models by December 2023 Moodys would jack up the credit rating over night! Then Tesla could just deliver the same 5 and claim parts shortages.

Who belives the Volkswagen Group is just stupid after the killing of Diesel. The responsibles since early Hitler betraying the first buyers have now rescued the crown juwels and separated Porsche from the rest. There for most analysts unaware is the partnership with Croatian Tesla Mate Rimac with now Bugatti-Rimac and the Hyundai Group. So the owner families safe their assets to get rid of Volkswagen finally and if necessary. Thanks for your fine report showing what goes on. But German taxpayers will settle this problems finally because VW is also partially state owned and to big to fail. And it’s all about the people at the management level and leased badly paid workers. If you do no more respect people, customers and employees you are already dead. It’s not always cheaper at any price and some will learn the lesson of Elon Musk, which they totally underestimated in their given arrogance towards real innovation. I was once shareholder in an outstanding hybrid motor concept using just 1/3 of parts with the kg-performance of a formula one engine. So I personally experienced about what I speak!😎🤮

its now mandatory to say your going to have 20 new models in two years, its now mandatory to sell cars that wont be delivered for two years. yea right, its a slow spiral down. Your right Sam, the OEMs are running around like headless chooks. They thought going to EVs was as simple as reorganising the production line. As Tesla has shown, it takes years of meticulous planning and outstanding engineering to put it all together. The software issues are just symptoms of bad planning and a lack of understanding by management. The business model of outsourcing just doesnt work in this environment. It just adds to the roadblocks they are finding.

I've heard this a time or three: "Tesla 3/Y is the new Beetle...the real "People's car" created by a charismatic schizophrenic leader, ubiquitous, at every street light, popular, oversold perhaps but beloved, not stylish but still eye-catching, iconic, an instant legend, etc". As a child we had a game to count red Bugs as we rode along and it took just 18 months to reach 1000 with my young buddies at school. I see 10-20 Tesla a day in my city of 1.2 million and recently drove past 16 at a major shopping mall's charging center.

VW 75, GM 35, TOYOTA 40, FORD ?? where are all the batteries going to come from to produce 150+ new models at scale? Even Tesla with deals with mining companies are struggling to ramp battery production to bring semi and roadster 2.0 to market. It is very likely that Tesla have many models already designed that they could manufacture if the battery supply was available. The legacy automakers are bigger bullsh1tters than the sales staff at their dealerships.

The most competitive SUV series of BYD since 2019 is the 5-seat Song series, instead of 7-seat Tang series. From Song Pro DM to Pro DM-i to Plus DM-i, or Song EV models, the Song series has been the best selling SUV series in BYD records, millions of Chinese customers who set their order months ago are still waiting for notification from BYD sales to get their new Song SUV. That's why you won't see BYD Song series shipping to Europe or North America or South East Asia in the coming months, at least not a chance in 2022. It wasn't about technology sanction or shortage in chips, no, BYD has very few impact from sanctions of all kinds, the main limitation right now is it's expanding the production capacity as much as it could but building factories take time!

I recently recieved my Tesla Model 3 and have owned it for 3 weeks. Like every new purchase where you buy a new technology you have anxiety on wether you have made the right choice. I can tell you after owning it for three days I realized this was the best decision I had made. It really does everything it claims and has a premium finish. As for saving money I have solar and it is a no brainer in hindsight now to have an EV with Solar and even without solar you will only spend a 1/4 of what you use to spend owning an ice car. 2 months prior too recieving my Tesla my ice car still only 4 years old and under waranty had the engine catastrophically fail. It was a Skoda Superb with all the bells and whistles. As Skoda is owned by VW I can only tell you my only experience with owning a VW product was the worst car ownership experience I have had in my life. I couldn't wait to get away from ICE cars and now cant see why anyone would like to suffer the ownership experience of anything made by VW Group. I am not suprised VW group are having so many problems and I will never purchase anything from them again. VW group dont want to help you they just want your money and deliver a sub standard product that looks great on the surface but is poor underneith with no service or support after you buy it. Sfter my experience with VW group I cant see them surviving the EV competition that is coming at them and there substandard products and services.

No matter what VW do, there is no guarantee that they will solve their software issues. Auto software is engineering. A legacy auto company DOES NOT value engineering - they are considered below MBA management structure - ask Sandy Munroe. Except EV software now includes electronic expertise, battery and thermal management systems, motor control and system architecture. Where does the MBA management fit in with this ? VW, along with other legacy auto think they can resolve the software " issue", (along with other "EV issues") with management decisions...Which, in fairness, is a methodology that has worked for decades - bear in mind dinosaurs were successful for millions of years - until suddenly, they weren't. The Innovator's Dilemma (Christensen) explains this really well...disruption ALWAYS comes from outsiders....

Ever drive up to a fast food drive-in and the menu is 8 sections wide - a hundred things to consider and you give up and order a burger and fries to go? VW is insane and I hope they double the number of brands they want to EV - make 200 different car models.

@William Arrington I often disagree with No Left Turns, but I agree with him on this issue. Marketing research strongly suggests that companies with a sparse product range tend to have better sales than companies with a much wider product range. A BestInTESLA video provides a good discussion on this issue: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ip7cZ3xracl2j6M For another data point, if you visit the Dell website you will see that the company offers over 300 different models of laptop. In contrast, Apple offers only 2 or 3. Apple is much more profitable than Dell.

I needed some custom financial software, just a macro really, written some years ago. We asked for the best person our temp agency had. I figured it was a half day job. After two full days, he left us a piece that totally omitted one of the primary criteria. I came in myself at 6am the next Monday, and using the reference guide to the software, had the entire macro done and working 100% before lunch. So much for alleged programmers. I don’t think these legacy oems get it. The software needs to be part of the system and not tacked on. The software needs to sit on top of their hardware and let the software control the hardware. I think this is the reason why Tesla can fire off over the air updates to fix “recall” issues or any issues actually.
@CiaranMcHale
@CiaranMcHale 2 жыл бұрын
@William Arrington Do an internet search for an article entitled "Analysis: Tesla software updates allow quick fixes - and taking risks". A chart in that article contradicts your claim about how common it is for (non-Tesla) car companies to resolve recall issues with over-the-air updates. That article was written in February; perhaps things have changed since then.

@William Arrington lol you think oem are doing it because it is the right thing and not they weren't forced? Funny. GM lost a lawsuit recently for an excessive oil consumption engine that they won't cover in warranty. GM faced a lawsuit to do a recall on small block V8 engines for using substandard materials that cause engines to fail prematurely.... GM deliberately sold trucks that they know to have bad engines...

Tesla is a software/Artificial Intelligence company that makes cars & etc. They expand in other areas because everyone else is below standard, e.g. recharging stations, batteries/energy, insurance, solar, etc. So their competition should be Google, Apple, or Microsoft. But that's not happening, so car companies will just have to take 10-15 years to catch up, but cars will definitely be driving themselves by then. Buy Tesla stock. It will be like the CHOAM company on Dune.

I know there are many incompetent software developers out there (I have encountered my share), but jeez, is this really that difficult? It certainly doesn't seem like it should be. The job is pretty straightforward - run the lights and radio, control battery usage and load leveling, and above all make the software update mechanism bulletproof. If they were attempting self-driving, I'd say yes, that's very complex. But we're talking only basic functionality here. How difficult can it be?

VW’s problem is a product of their outdated and antiquated boomer mentality. That is, “we’ve been doing this forever, and we know how to do it better than you, look at our history and track record, and get out of our way.” It’s comical to see ads on TV from legacy automakers for EV’s that won’t be on the market for 2-5 years. They never did this with ICE vehicles. Now they say from behind, “look what we are going to do,” as multiple more technologically advanced companies have big leads on them. Legacy auto is a dead man walking, because they can’t get out of their own way. The boomer corporate leadership methods are being disrupted from all angles. What they did in the past is no longer relevant in todays highly advanced technological world that moves far faster than they are capable of comprehending. They can’t even wrap their minds around the rapidity of current converging technologies. On top of that, they have become bad actors, performing in the mainstream media, making claims about what they are going to do and when, even though their generation can’t even figure out how to use their personal cell phones. Put them in their nursing homes and let them stare at walls for their last 5-10 years of life. For decades now, this is the generation that has continuously shit on and denigrated anything the younger generations have been trying to achieve.

IMO Teslas are overpriced here in the US ($70K+ after taxes and fees for a MY) and are leaving the door open for anyone to enter the mkt. As you know in ICE cars, not everyone drives a BMW or Mercedes (some people drive 10 year old cars and trucks) so there is a huge amount of room for decent inexpensive EVs that get acceptable range here in the US.

You need to develop things either those providers but in the Chinese versions or use Chinese providers. And where do you find the best cloud engineers for China? Defently not in Wolfsburg neither in California. Aslo you are mixing the 1.1, 1.2 and the 2.0. That there are problems in the 1.1 and 1.2 does not imply that will be in 2.0.

"Integration" is a car manufacturer's bread and butter, how do you think all those electronic systems work toguether? VW's issue is that they tried to make their own software stack top to bottom when starting from 0 and late to the party instead of adopting Android Automotive. Now they realized that was a mistake and are moving to AA but that takes time.

It makes me wonder how, to the best of my knowledge anyway as not owing a Tesla, Tesla can produce a working vehicle with their own proprietary OS and get it so right. BYD can do similar with their software of which I do have experience and which overall is pretty good - maybe a slight glitch here and there but nothing I'm sure which can't be ironed out in more OTA updates and is totally acceptable at the moment. We then come to VW. On a technical level, I'm not sure what the problems are, but they must be severe given the reporting. I agree with Sam if this is as bad as he says. The conventional ICE auto business model is flawed. And trying to continue this way and expect different results is mental illness. High debt, low margins, too many models, needing too many spare parts inventories, too many recalls, high complication and repair costs, operating expenses rising. high polluting! And a corrupt and antiquated dealership business model that lowers profits, causes customer services problems and bad reputations. And in certain countries, the problem of corrupt labor unions. VW, Toyota, Honda, GM, Stellantis, all face growing pains trying to transition to EVs. None are computer experts, or software experts. EVs are computers on 4 wheels! Only the Sony/Honda partnership offerings may have genuine competitive success against Tesla. Sony has computer, software, sensor technology prowess.
