Hi Martin, interesting and useful video. Two questions: does the cellular data service for online mode require payment, like a mobile phone? I’ve always wondered that about cars that offer a WiFi hotspot. Secondly, could you, perhaps in another video, explain the benefits (or not) of the B mode?

You have to be a very clever geek, and probably far more intelligent than a VW dealer technician, to know to recalibrate the window regulators before being able to install a software update. Who would have been able to work that out? I presume Martin that the 3.0 and 3.2 software updates have not brought about any menu changes, faster responses or better graphics but in your experience is the software on the ID vehicles with the new larger SatNav/Infotainment screen much quicker and easier to use? Just a pity that VW have not been able to work out how via a OTT update they can change the haptic controls to a more intuitive interface for drivers. I cannot help but think that the old i3 iDrive controller and its somewhat limited software features made life easier for us oldies.

VW did themselves provide the window calibration instructions back during the early 3.0 waves. 3.0 ota was a big improvement for us, it made the infotainment smoother (but not quicker to start up) and the car more efficient. The main 3.2 improvement for me was just putting driving consumption data in the driver display.

5:37 Heads-up, OTA update checks are done on the day your CarNet module was first commissioned by VW. No there a specific way to see your day of the week of commission. Also on this day you need to drive 9 miles at least before the update will begin download.

The smaller battery got the charging rate improvement with, or 2.3 for cars that came with that from factory (that jncluded our car). The larger battery got the charging rate improvement with 3.0.

11:55 MY2024 vehicles do not have a completely different hardware, the SoC is up-reved with 2GB more RAM and 8-12% boot in clock speed. The module changes is software fix for navigation to control battery PTC heater, which rest of the fleet need BTW. Also the new UI is just a skin, it runs on an onboard webserver the decision to not to improve UI yet is not because it’s not update able.

3.7 arrived on my ID3 1st. Installed it yesterday (210 minutes update). Now, it tries to install the manual, but doesn't succeed. Also unable to display the software version. Can not be loaded at the momemt. Please try later. Any idea what to do?

I got the orange “update information” button on my ID4 but since I was parked temporarily outside a shop I didn’t want to start the installation that would take 212 minutes. But now when I’m home, I no longer see orange button. how do I now trigger the install? 😅

5:37 Heads-up, OTA update checks 7:47 Also after successful install you will not get a push or email notification. You just need to give the car amble time. There isn’t a way to know if the update is complete, notification email gets sent after you unlock/access the car after the update.

My ID.5 is already running 3.7, so I wonder how much higher I can go?! I've noticed that 4.0 runs with the smaller screen set up, so I wonder if that could be an option in the future?

No. I contacted VW Germany about this as on Reddit a lot of people had the same question. Their reply was: "We kindly inform you that the 3.X infrastructure cannot be upgraded to a version of 4.X or above." Since they're now on a new version/platform (both software & hardware) my best guess is that we might see important security updates but no other updates (or features). At least I'd be surprised that they'd still invest resources in the 3.x At first I was disappointed as with these modern cars you'd expect to receive updates like on a phone, laptop, etc. for years to come. However, my previous car had no updates and I was still happy to drive that one around. I've also heard and read that the initial 1st gen. ID3s had bugs, but mine has ran fine on 3.7 for months on end without any issues so can't complain.

Obvious software issues aside the id3 seems to be a good car? If you buy used should all be on software 3 by now if the car was serviced?

It’s a good car, should ideally be on 3.2 if you are buying a used car at the moment.

@@MattHale121 Thanks! I did do a short test drive and liked the id 3 but you know all the doubts potentially going electric and all that. Probably Model 3 is the better EV/software but don't need the performance or the... drama for lack of better word?

I really love it! Much more than I initially expected. The software can be a bit slow, but completely fine in the grand scheme of things. Definitely improved compared to where it was 3 years ago when they launched. If you are buying new, even the base Model 3 is objectively a better car, but used, the value of these ID.3s is hard to beat. (There is no way I would go back to an ICE.)

We bought a 23 month old 1st Edition in March 2023. It came with v2.4 software and a replacement battery but that failed almost immediately. The battery was replaced again. The car went to a VW agent in December 2023 and was updated to v3.2. They had the car for 4 days. V3.2 seems just fine. Do I really want to upgrade further?

I think there is no rush to update if you are on 3.1 / 3.2, but given the updates are free and over the air, then why not? Even if it's just bug fixes, it's nice to see continued support for a product.

I didn't get any notifications. I believe if the car is mid-update it won't unlock until it's completely done.

Yes. All ID.3s ever made have support over-the-air updates (as long as they have been brought up to software version 3.0 by the garage).

Jesus! Can’t believe that the European manufacturers need engineers as customers to have the SW updates and 😬 waiting for the best. Tesla? 1) receive notification in the App on the phone or car screen 2) Connect to WiFi or a hotspot from your phone 3) Press “Install now” or “Schedule to x date and y time” - receive a notice on the phone, within 20-45’, that the update is complete - receive all feature updates - more efficient run, new Apps, enhanced emergency control breaking, and many, many more. Repeats ~ 5-6 weeks. Please, VW!

Yep. My father drives a Tesla and the software difference is night and day. Plus keep in mind VW is actually at the forefront of legacy automakers when it comes to OTA updates, etc.

It isn’t complicated once you authorise it just does it in the background. Thankfully it’s not run on beta software like Tesla so doesn’t need updating
