Man that is a tough one right! It is fun watching your process man definitely the way I usually do it to. Figure it out as you go, never be afraid of possibly messing it up. I live by the mantra "I can fix that" good stuff man!

Really nice work there! 50 year old car that’s been banged around some, 50 year old fender that rode around on another car that’s been banged around. Just amazing you can get them together like that!

I'm working on a 70 Ghia. This gives me alot of pointers. Great video, you don't have to make excuses to me, I think you're doing a phenomenal job. I don't have any accident damage. Just real bad rockers and heater channels. I have very little welding experience but you have to start somewhere. If I fail, oh well. I'll just use the engine in something else. I really want to get this thing on the road though.

Great work! I try to plan my repair. Compare replacement panel to original. Measure, mark, and study it. Then when the work starts, the new discoveries come along. The job always changes as you go. Your work is an inspiration to us neo-body men.

Impressive work Mike! Off the top of my head I really can't think of another car more challenging bodywork-wise than a Karmann Ghia, but once you see one fully restored and how beautiful they are it can provide an awful lot of motivation to keep working on it!

Ah man that was awesome 👏 I’m working on my Ghia right now. Thank god I don’t have to do anything that extensive. But it’s been bondoed up, with cracks in it. Should be interesting what I find. Boogerd up front nose that I need to straighten. Your giving me confidence that I can do it. Great video, thanks Mike!

Ahhhh... A Ghia fender job is not for the faint of heart. Did one once, and I never want to do another! The car was a '60 and replacement fender was a salvage fender from another '60. Rust and filler on both. These were hand built and the replacement was about an inch longer than the original. Ghia's are fragile and rust prone - challenging to get right 🙏 Edit: Forgot to say thank you for the video!😊
@Mikefngarage3 жыл бұрын
Yea for sure they really have lots of similarities at the 356.....and should be worth more than they are. cool rides.
@TheDasbull3 жыл бұрын
Some of the 356's were made at Karmann coach works. The Porsche folks wouldn't want to hear about the similarities 😉. It seems that the slightest collision on a Ghia results in a lot of damage...

Another Ghia! I believe these cars had their parts leaded in, fenders, etc. I remember many years ago you could buy OEM German noses for these for $400.00. I don’t know why they are more prone to getting hit on the nose than any other model car I know!
@Mikefngarage3 жыл бұрын
there were some lead and some welds. to put those in from the factory.
@Mercmad3 жыл бұрын
I use a cheapass chicom lazer level mounted on a pole (old fan base) .In your situation I would use it to aim one line down the center line pressing in the nose and set the horizontal line on the Right hand vent hole. this would give you an easier take on how the panel is sitting by matching the replacement vent . .

good repair as you say its no show car just a daily driver as long as its welded securely it will be ok done a few similar repairs and there not as easy as repairing with new panels

Oh, oh, I saw the maligned urethane steering coupler; I would never use one of those; they’re not fabric reinforced and can break without warning. I miss my ‘69; my high school car; a hand me down from my dad who used it for 7 years as a daily driver. We spruced it up and it was beautiful and great until one of my younger brothers totaled it in an accident. If that hadn’t happened I’d still have it.

I noticed the urethane steering coupler as well...just replaced my original coupler a few months ago and definitely did NOT use a urethane one :)

No I dont use them much. Sheet metal screws usually do just as good. But On butts sometimes it is fast when you use washers on the backsides. better than butt welding clamps that take too much time to install.
