My wife and I rented a vehicle to drive down to San Diego from the Bay Area. Started out in a Honda SUV and because it had front brake issues, we switched to a Ford SUV in Monterey. Both vehicles depended on ‘screen time’ to do most anything and on the the steering wheel, there were half a dozen buttons on each side of the hub. To one who drives either a 02 Tacoma or an 09 Mini, way too many distractions and way too difficult to deal with cabin temp or anything else. My biggest problem was screwing up the Map app while trying to use the screen for another task. And then, we had to pull over to fix it because the feature doesn’t work while the vehicle is in motion. We switched to using my wife’s iPhone and it’s map app. That’s what I see with this VW you reviewed. I’ll die before buying a new vehicle...seriously. I’m done.

It doesn’t really compete with the Gti/Gli in the same respect, but we don’t get the Gti Club Sport (which isn’t as hardcore as it was for the mk7) and we don’t have anything higher than a Gli. The car is definitely cheaper feeling and the quality is noticeably lower in more than just the materials and build quality, but it’s still a good place to spend time. It’s a hoot to drive and while the steering isn’t as good as the Gti’s, the rest of the car was a little more harsh, but I like that. The design of the interior is nice and they have made HUGE strides from previous Hyundais/Kia’s and it’s definitely a better car than the Veloster N imo. Go test drive one and see if it checks your boxes, they have a good warranty and it’s a great car for any stock car. For some, it might be the better option and for others it might be worse. Incredibly cheap interior for that price on the MK8 that the previous MK7 *definitely* didn't suffer from. And, on the S trim, despite getting remote start; you don't get remote keyless entry. That's ridiculous for a $30K car! Steering wheel fake buttons too easy to accidentally hit. Golf ball shifter on the manual now morphed into something uncomfortable for a human hand to grip. VW's version of a CVT automatic (nearly $1K extra) has the shift lever given a partial penectomy. Saw a 6-month review by an SE owner who is already complaining about mysterious rattles in the passenger side front door and in the dash. Owner paid an extra $10K for his because VW dealers are shamlessly marking them up. His conclusion, not worth what he paid for it. Positives: Uses regular gas, and gets very good gas mileage. Plus, practical to live with on a daily basis. Though honestly, several cars out there like that too.

The mk8 GTI from a pricing perspective makes the most sense in S trim (which is closer to 30k) the GTI that was tested is an autobahn and has historically always been the seemingly overpriced trim. The S model also comes with a simpler interface that still includes a manual volume knob. As a mk7 owner I truly believe it is a nice evolution forward, however if you were to pay 40k for a GTI you might as well spend the extra 5k and get a mk8 R. (if you can find one for msrp)

I'll keep my 2017 MK7 GTI SE DSG and with a few cost effective mods (ECU, TCU & Suspension) I can have more power and comparable or better handling then the MK8. And I'll have the clean and properly configured interior (buttons, hybrid analog/digital gauges) of the MK7 too! The elimination of the proper sequential floor shifter (MK7) in the MK8 DSG in favor of that little tiny gear selector is a huge mistake IMO, since I use the floor shifter and paddles in manual mode all of the time. I could clearly see from the video that when your hands are in the proper driving position on the wheel (9 & 3) that part of their hands was on the haptic selectors and could possibly be activated, as in the C&D hot lap vid. NOT acceptable VW!! What have you done to our beloved GTI & R!! Peace

Yes, it is not perfect, but the level of hyperventilation by the car reviewing community is absurd. DO NOT LISTENING TO THE WHINING! IT IS NOT DIFFICULT! Edit: The haptic buttons on the steering wheel are too sensitive, I will admit to that. Edit 2: The GTI starts at $32k. You don't have to spend $40k! Mention these things please!

I owned a GTi performance S with the MT in the 7.5gen. It was a blast to drive, but the build quality was horrible. It fell completely apart before 20k miles. That said, it was incredibly fun to drive and the plaid interior with the golf ball shift knob made it a fun thing to own. I think they ruined it with this new one, but after owning one, I’m good on ever getting another VW from Mexico

@@Dusty1698 I am guessing my car was built by a guy in Mexico that wanted to leave the factory early on Friday. The driver door adjustment bolt was detached and the door literally fell off the stopper part in the middle of the door.. Luckily i had the door in hand when it happened.. So i was able to gently close the door, and the Dealer had to Helicoil a new bolt into the body to get the part reconnected. Then the issues with electric-tronics started around the 10K mile mark, where i would get a Xmas display of warning lights on the dash, which they blamed the battery for, indicating the car was updating data over night, and ran the battery dead, then i had an issues where both driver and passenger doors started to leak water into the interior when it rained, Then at about 14K miles it started to leak oil from the turbo housing seal, which was replaced under warranty, then it started to have a limp mode issue, where the new turbo was leaking vacuum causing a run lean error, which they found to be a cracked intake manifold.. then i traded it in at 16K miles for an F150.. Listen they are a BLAST to drive, amazing handling, and quite honestly probably the best manual transmission in a FWD car i have ever driven, way better than any modern Honda.. But if you are going to go GTI, lease it..

Even as a devout Honda guy, I quite liked the MK7 styling and performance... Especially for the price. And while I don't mind the MK8 performance, the styling and interior design is an absolutely massive letdown. Especially when you could get the Type R for about the same money and it would walk ALL OVER the GTi in pretty much every category. Sure, the R styling is a little silly and the infotainment sucks but you got another 60+ HP over even the MK8, another 30 ish lb-ft of torque, proper steering, proper adaptive damping, significantly more interior space, and it has actual fucking buttons. VW missed it with this one, huge.
@vr6gls Жыл бұрын
1) The Type is comparable to a Golf R. Not a GTI. 2) Type R is manual only. Believe it or not, that is a deal breaker for some people. 3) Try buying a Type R at MSRP. Almost all Type R’s have ludicrous dealer markups. So in reality the VW is much cheaper.
