Good point about the oil relief valve. I didn’t have any luck using a tap to remove a stock plunger... I ended up very carefully drilling it, tapping it with a 1/4” tap and threading the bolt into it... yanked it out that way. Even the tool didn’t provide enough grip for it. The guy who brought me the case said someone tried to put an aftermarket kit in there and jammed it up there. 😂 Thanks for showing us some cool rides, the Diesel GMC and bronco were my favorites.

and???? Nice engineering getting it out.

I got lucky with my "stuck" relief piston. It "seemed" like it was pretty much welded in there, and I was skeptical even the special tool would get it out. Turns out just using the right 3 1/2" shank bolt with course threads gave enough bite to get it out. I was pleasantly surprised.

It's the wealth of knowledge that all of us garage rebuilders have that keep the hobby alive. I've been doing VW since 1969 and my first full rebuild was a 1300 40Hp. I'm still learning tricks and hope to pass on that info to my grandsons. Thanks for the car show

Right on. That's why this platform is nice for sharing experience. We can't afford to make all the mistakes that we inevitably all make. Good Luck with your grandsons. Mine are great kids but they have to much testosterone to be interested in grandpa's VW's.

Great info! I just used a tap to pull my oil piston out, tap went to bottom then spun it loose. Those old custom diesel trucks are getting popular.

I've been drilling out the dump hole when running large pumps with an engine with tight clearances.
@TheEZGZ4 жыл бұрын
Should not use a large pump then. Big power race engine should have extra clearance so wouldn't be a problem. I trust the factory design

I would like to know if a stuck oil relief valve or combination of the oil relief and control valve on the post 1970 motors would make a dipstick check not show the correct oil level after a new oil change??? Is that possible?
@TheEZGZ2 жыл бұрын
No. But the oil level will be slightly lower when you shut the engine off because the oil cooler gets filled up and takes a while to drain back to the sump
@ebutuoyebutouy4 жыл бұрын
Smaller piston and same spring resulted in higher oil pressure? Perhaps smaller piston had a larger deck hight compressing spring a little further? Alternately original piston was not seating and bypass hole was partially exposed? Still confused.
@TheEZGZ4 жыл бұрын
I did it in the car. There was so much oil running out I couldn't tell much. Might have been some junk at the top of the bore????? Next time I change my oil I'm going to have a closer look. I'll will keep everyone posted.

Is it possible for the front valve to hydro lock? Or the valve closer to the oil pump.
@TheEZGZ4 жыл бұрын
NO, there is a relief hole in the spring area which returns it to the oil sump

hey EZ, I just built a brand new all new parts engine and when I turn it over it only reads 20 psi. Idk why that would be, I have a full flow system in it.
@TheEZGZ Жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delay. 20 psi at idle is just fine. The old rule of thumb is 10 psi for 1,000RPM The book says minimum at 2,500 RPM is 28 with warm engine and 30 weight oil.

Would a stuck valve cause the oil pressure to get so high that the engine has trouble cranking?
@TheEZGZ4 жыл бұрын
Cranking as in starting? No

Would a bad pressure relief system give you low oil pressure after warm up?
@TheEZGZ3 жыл бұрын
Usually a sticking relief valve will show up on a rebuilt engine because of contamination. All things being equal on a high mileage engine it's worn out and the large clearances lower the oil pressure. Could be a worn or damaged oil pump too. All these things can cause your engine to be low on power poor gas mileage and runs hot.
@rwebdaddy3 жыл бұрын
@@TheEZGZ Hey bud thanks for the reply. So it's a new build with a used but good CB performance oil pump with the filter attachment. It does have the dual oil pressure releif case. And I believe it's still has the old springs and plungers in it.
@TheEZGZ3 жыл бұрын
First thing I would look at is the oil pressure gauge your using. If it's a VDO with electric sender I wouldn't trust it. Use a new mechanical gauge for a test and comparison. It dosen't hurt to pull the relief valves and see how they checkout. Don't try to fix a problem by putting stiffer springs or longer relief pistons in or run heavier oil IMHO There are so many factors in building an engine right. Sometimes you just have to live with it. There is no simple solution
