8:28 isn't that pad gold plated? If that's the case, it should be able to accept solder without any issues. Maybe the scratching isn't necessary in this case. Edit: didn't seem like the solder would run and net the yellowish part of the pad when you were applying solder to the scratched pads. So maybe it's not gold.

since he grinded the contact points and got rid of the aluminum wires, he used regular flux and solder.
