Just bought a very original sub 50k mile 1986 scala off my dad, loads of recipts and proof of mileage etc. been off the road garaged since 2019 (strut top bearing race cracked and stiff clutch cable pulled through bulk head) and was garaged for at least 15 years before that, I did some work last year when it had to come out of storage. I had to weld the cracked bulkhead and fit a new cable to repair the clutch issue and while i was at it I replaced the strut tops (re enforced), new bump stop and covers, painted the struts and replaced the dampers, powder coated the front springs, new bottom arms, ball joints & bushes, new disc back plates (and wheel bearings because they have to come out to do the back plates) serviced it with new oil & filter, air filter, spark plugs & leads, cambelt kit, water pump, fresh coolant and thermostat. after all that it has just sat since, It was painful seeing it unused, i've just got to pass my driving test now :)

The Scirocco brings back memories. I had the first generation 1980 model and it was one of the quickest, light and nimble fun car I ever drove. It was only 1.6 litre engine (78 HP in Canada) but for that time, it gave Chevy V8’s a good run. The Scirocco was less than 2000 lbs and I’d accelerate up and down streets with hills and get air born and never bottom out. I gave it up after 13 years and got myself a 1987 944 Turbo. Yes, another 80’s classic. I still have it (over 30 years) and it still awesome to drive. Anyways, you’ve got yourself a classic car that needs a little TLC. Looking for your videos on the progress on this. Keep up the great work!

Most likely the car goes lean and stumbles because your in-tank pump is crapping out. That’s probably the reason why the backseat bottom was out. It’s under that round plastic cap. 👍🏻

I had a beautiful black 88 16V. It was bought used from the original owner in the 90’s. Than sold between me and 2 of my friends over the years till it was my daily driver till I garaged it for years. I sold it a few years ago with 188K on it. Was in better shape than yours. I sold it cheap for 2700. But actually my favorite Scirocco was the 81 S Model. Now I own 3 of them. A blast to drive, handles superior to the 88 16V, the 88 was off balance with the added inches to the front and rear of the car. But I did like the horse power gain with the 16V. I always did liked the white over the black color. Your car looks beautiful. It’s in decent shape. Great leather interior, mine was the black grey velour material.

For low power issues, also check that the cam timing is not back a tooth. The shaved grill is likely to accommodate the Kamei grill spoiler with the US lights. The Kamei eyebrow spoiler was designed for use with euro lights. Your euro lights have broken adjusters, difficult to get. There are certain BMW ones that fit I believe.

The old Mustangs had an oil *pressure* gauge. But I added an oil temp gauge. My pressure would be rock steady, but when the engine was almost a quart low, the TEMP would go up by ten degrees. Oil temperature was an early warning system. (The rear main seal on the 289's all leaked.)

I owned 3 Sciroccos, the first was a 84 Wolfsburg 8v edition in red with black leather. The second was a white 88 16v with a full Borla exhaust and the car would consistently run at 140mph with ease. My last one in 1998 was another white 88 16v that had been totally customized by the previous owner with euro headlights, euro bumpers, white Enkei's, Sony stereo with MB Quartz speakers and Kenwood amps, lowered with coil-overs, welded in chassis reinforcement beams front and rear......I miss that last one as it was totaled in a wreck. I've had 2 of these Sciroccos back in the day, all be it both carburetted. On both vehicles the fuel tank filler pipe which runs in to the rear wheel arch corroded in the wheel arch area allowing the ingress of foreign matter which caused the lack of power issue exactly as you described.

Yeah, the move from oil pressure gauges to lights bothers me. On *some* cars when you're key on engine off the oil light being on actually verifies that when you have no oil pressure, and that the sensor and light both work. On newer cars the lights coming on generally only tells you that the bulb works and is just part of the IPC module boot-up. That means that you never actually *know* if you have oil pressure, because the light being off could mean you're fine or it could mean the sensor is broken.

Check the voltage at the pump first. They can fray at the wiring and drop voltage. Plus, Scirocco 16Vs have two pumps, and the in tank is notoriously fickle.

The grease in the sliding pin gets old, so yours isn’t sliding freely to lock the seat in. Just clean and re grease and make sure the spring is still there. Also check the plastic clips on the corners of the seat, they break off and your seat will rock side to side. Hard to find them now. A good idea for someone to make 3D replacements and sell them on eBay. I hand waxed mine so much over the years I had some primer showing through too. Please don’t repaint it, you will devalue the car allot. These cars had great paint. Just detail it.

Always stoked on all the 80s madness you've got going on! If my Corrado didn't have tan leather I'd be all over those embroidered headrests. Don't be so bummed about the paint, just think about how rad its gonna look with a fresh respray. The nostalgia factor alone will pay for itself. P.S. I kinda dig the louvers. Pull the oils to the surface and maybe heat correct some of the warping (not sure if it was or not, but at a glance looked like it could use it)

No. Don't ruin the handling with that giant lump up there. I drove a VR6 for 17 years, and I love the engine, but it is too big for an A3 Golf, much less an A1 Scirocco. 16v forever. I'd also accept 1.8t, but normally aspirated is more this car's vibe.

The 8V watercooled engines had a nasty habit of spiking the oil pressure above 100 psi on cold startup. In the late 80's I had a 1983 GTI. I replaced the analog clock with an electric 150psi VDO gauge to get one that had a sensor that didn't rupture and puke oil all over on the first cold start. I've forgotten what VDO series matched the original gauges. I want to say Cockpit series but I'm really not sure.

I do not follow college or professional Football very much and did not know that the Huskers lost the 1992 National Championship to Clemson. NIce!!! Last sale I saw a few months ago, restored was either $32k or $35k. Can't quite remember. In current condition, I think market value for mine could be in the $15k range. In the past 6 months, 2 other Scirocco's sold for $25k and $28k I realize you know what you''re doing. I hope you don't me chiming in..... I've seen that rear window louver you purchased being sold recently. It's ok but if you can actually find one from the 80's, those are manufactured much nicer looking. The black board you were holding but couldn't name (12:30) is referred to as a parcel shelf. Do you have the Euro wiring for the Euro lights? The US harness doesn't quite work. I got lucky and have headlight adjustment motors with my Euro headlights plus the side marker lights. Those front seats look to be in excellent shape. I have Corrado seats. It looks like you'll need the hard to find plastic runners that fit on the adjustment frame and keep it from wobbling in the frame rail. The problem with a white headliner for the sunroof is that it will get dirty after awhile from the movement back and forth. I don't know how to keep bits of dust and grime from building up and transferring onto the headliner. When you do the respray, taking off the gutter rack protectors is super delicate. They may be siliconed in or just "glued" in from years of dirt and grime. The front tab can easily break off so try not to bend it up. They're designed to slide towards the back of the car about a 1/4" to 3/8" to unlock the tab in front and in back. Then you can gently lift/pry the guard out. What great man land you have! You are the car guy, love it! Nice YT channel! Glad to see that you've taken off with it. I'm working on mine.
