The law of diminishing returns. You can tweak a car, but going all out with big mods, adding forced induction rarely bears fruit. Sure, you could buy a 2024 GTI and put a big turbo kit, suspension and all the go fast stuff on it, spending an extra $15-20k on it. But that $40k VW with $20k in mods will never be as good as the $60k BMW 2 series you could have bought with the same money. That doesn’t mean, you can’t take that GTI and dial in the suspension for what you do, add a little power here and there. But VERY few of us have the engineering background to actually modify a car into a higher bracket of capability. You may successfully add significant power, but odds are the overall experience and execution of the call will be ruined.

Yeah, that was pretty great. Two car knuckleheads. I built up a Mk3 Jetta 97 over a few years. Each modification was such a huge improvement. But, I still think the best was the short shifter conversion. The stock manual transmission has some kind of clunky shifter mechanism, but it really made a huge difference with new aftermarket hardware. I don't think I could have kept the VW Scirocco stock the way Jason has, so hat's off to him. It's a truly historic vehicle, now.

I bought this car with a 1.8liter engine used in Virginia Beach in 1992 and drove it up and down the Eastern Seaboard for clinical rotations, down to Mexico for a trip, then up the Al-Can to get me to Anchorage where I lived for a few years between med school and residency. The best iteration I had of this car was with studded snowtires, two spares on top with my snowboard and 5 gallon tank of gas (just in case), driving down the Al-Can in December on snowpacked roads for hundreds of miles to rejoin the continental US. The balance and torque steer were so predictable that I could rotate the car into a curve by giving more throttle or lightening off the throttle without altering the steering wheel orientation. It served me well throughout residency at UVa where I sold it. I wish I still had that car today.

VWs of that era were truly good. Usually they had less power than Italian cars but could do up to 800 thousand kilometers without overhaul. Todays VWs are mostly terrible and to be sure most can't come even close to mileages those old one could.

I had the choice of cars when I was in college, summer of1985, at the Fredericksburg, VA dealer wholesale auction. Two family members were used car dealers and my dad floor planned one of them and helped with car transport on occasion. However, my father was gracious enough to double my savings of $2,300 for a car. I honed in on a TR7 convert and my dad said no way, it’s a piece of junk. Next caught my eye was a Gen 1 Scirocco, then near to it was an ‘82 Gen 2 Scirocco. Won the auction on the Gen 2 at $4,300 just 3 years old and 40K on the Odo. Drove it 200K with synthetic oil and no car payments. I invested the difference of a car payment in the stock market in the late 80s and 90s. Now I’m retired at 47. The ‘82 Gen 2 was a great car in the snow (Colorado school) but was on;y good for 200K, absolutely not 800L Kilometers. However, I now wish I had bought the Gen 1 Scirocco and kept it. They are pricier today than Gen 2

"Common" cars always become iconic and cool years or decades after they stop being common. Everyone knows the Ferrari's and Lambo's will be forever cool, but no one realizes how cool "Common" cars will be a few decades after theyre trashed and on their last legs. The biggest moment it hits you is when you havent seen one in years, and one makes its rare appearance around town. Or someone rolls up in a mint condition one.

As a former 3x owner of Sciroccos from my early driving days (culminating in a 1988 16V in Tornado Red), all I can say is that this video meant a whole lot to me. Thanks for sharing the Scirocco passion with Jay in such a wonderful way, and I so love the fact that this is your all-time keeper car. Although I sold mine well over 20 years ago, the memories are forever, and it's the car I first took my wife and I on a date. As I always say within the context of 1980s era Volkswagens, there are Golf/GTI people and Scirocco people, but they often don't mix. I was always very proudly a Scirocco man!

Turns out, after three months, it wasn’t working out, my dad got pissed, and quit. He sold his Impala to a German car. It for a huge profit and we went back home to Cali. Back in the early 2000s in NZ, I loved my mk3 GTI 16V. Yeah, it might not have had the turbo or the v-tec like a lot of my friends JDM cars. But, damn! It was fun on our small, winding country roads. Lowered slightly with bilstein shocks, it handled like a go-kart and always made me smile. The scirocco and the corrado were always a dream of mine to own. Ahhh those were the days.

Wow, amazingly clean example of this awesome car! I bought a used turbo 16v 88 Scirocco back in 2000. It had a slight exhaust leak but it pulled nice. I took it up to the resorts snowboarding a few times and it was great in the high country! Mine also had the battery relocated to the rear. I had what looked to be the same front strut bar this one. It had H&R springs with Bilstein struts and handled really good. Mine also had power steering deleted which was good for this light car. I only probably drove it 1 or 2 years before I had to part with it because the exhaust leak got really bad. I also had an 87 16v Jetta for 10 years and lots of miles. I had a Techtonic exhaust and I an intake. Jason knows so much about this car it's mind blowing! That's crazy the transmission went out and locked up! So scary! I never heard of that issue and was lucky it didn't happen to my 16v's! Surprised VW didn't have any lawsuits from that issue. It seemed like it took a while for Jay to really warm up to it around 24:40.

I have one of the Sciroccos, from the first phase, first year of the MkII with just a windshield wiper blade, it's a Gti ,1600cc with 110cv and almost no brakes (by modern standarts...) but i love it, it's some kind of a karting experience. I bought it in 1998 and in very bad condition with 157.00kms and I made total rebuid, it currently has 407.00kms, runs on the second engine and will soon take on the second gearbox. It has already crossed 5 European countries, it shares its daily life with an Audi Coupé Gt (the poor man's quattro) and an Audi 100C3 Avant and every time I drive it in Lisbon or do a Lisbon Porto (300kms) on national roads by night a smiles appear on my face. Thanks for sharing about your Mk3 Jetta. I once bought a 1979 Audi Fox GTI, silver with leather interior, it was one of only 500 imported into the USA, and it was in absolutely mint condition with a high gloss on the paint. Someone had blown the 1.7L engine at some point and it was sitting in the driveway abandoned in a very remote tiny town. My Fox had round headlights (not square) and was the last of the round headlight body style, and it was one of the most beautiful cars that Audi ever made, it was a 2 door with perfect proportions. I spent months working on it, and finally got it driving with a new 1.8L engine out of the junkyard. After only about 5 days of driving it in town, I pulled out in front of someone and totaled the car. To this day I feel deeply wounded and traumatized from destroying that rare Audi Fox. I only paid $500 for it, but it was a priceless gem. If you've ever lost something that was dear to your heart, then you know the feeling. It feels like an attack--some force did not want me to be happy.

As a German from Düsseldorf, I'm NOT amused about the Cologne number plate... - just kidding, old city rivalry. Jason presents himself as a great guy - humble, funny and well-informed! I love how he also mentions the German horsepower which is different. One reason was: In the early 80's we didn't have a catalytic converter. After Volkswagen integrated one in the mid Eighties, horsepower figure of the GTI 16V fell from 139 to 129. I had the pleasure to drive in one of the non-restricted versions, but it was a Golf, not a Scirocco. At that time, these were light and agile rocket ships on every road, especially the Autobahn. What's so good about these is that they are solid (except some rust), reliable (except the valves and timing belt) and practical with some space and cargo area. The leather seats were quite good and special. They had a version where the black leather front seats were produced by Recaro. My son still has them in his mid-90's VW Polo with just 75 hp but it runs like hell. Nice episode which brings back some memories.

That's it. I'm getting mine sorted out this year. I have an early mk.2 with the base spec 1.5l engine but I think Jason was a little wide of the mark with his description of the engine. Mine is over square and though not a high performance example, it's the sweetest, most free revving little thing, with over 190k miles and plenty more to come. It loves to be driven hard and rewards you for doing it. I have a nice GTI engine I could put in the car but I can't bring myself to do it. I've had the car over 20 years, off the road for half of that though so the time has come to get it sorted and back together. Thanks Jason and Jay, just the encouragement I needed.
