A look at what needs to be done when you install a 78 or 82mm+ crankshaft in place of the stock 69mm,

Just had to mention, for anybody watching, Silicone on the case halves is a no no. Permatex Aviation is the way to go. Silicone will not allow faces to properly mate. I use it on all the paper gaskets too.

+Kewlbug Thanks for your contribution. I agree. I should have mentioned that. I picked that case up from someone and thats the way I got it. I always encourage helpful advice if given in a polite constructive way. My channel is all about helping others. Life is a learning curve. Some curves are harder than others. LOL Have a great day.

+TheEZGZ It's been a while but I seem to remember using some high temp black silicone, a real light coating on the case with good results. You have to be really careful to keep oil off the surface and it sealed just fine. Silicone is not for everything though. Everyone has different results. I have never had a clean engine for very long. The new valve cover gaskets are junk too.

The way it was explained to me.. oil leaks are not the issue here. VW machined case halves to fit with a zero clearance mate. The case is bolted together whenever it is line bored or machined for the bearings. The issue here is the .001-.005 or whatever space the silicone can cause. This space is translated to the bearings where oil pressure and other fitment issues can arise. Of course this is all super nitpicky, but anybody building an engine should be :) PS I knew that case was probably siliconed by someone else in the past, I did the same thing once ;)

They cnc clearance for stroker cranks at most vw machine shops. Doesn't take long and it takes minimal material.
@Alwayscheerfulx8 жыл бұрын
when they started to make the 1500 and 1600 cases they didnt beef them up any they were 40 hp with bigger stroke and pistons . the more you stroke them the more you stress the line bore. adding counterweight cranks kind of balances this.
@TheEZGZ8 жыл бұрын
+Alwayscheerfulx You obviously don't have a clue. Between 65 and 66 VW went from a 1200 to a 1300. They did this only from stroke. 66mm to 69mm. The 1500 to 1600 was all done with bore size. Grinding the case for longer strokes has been done for decades and if not done correctly can shorten the life or cause instant failure. It's all a matter of how fast and how long you can afford to go.

I have a 1971 AE 1600dp.in your opinion from your experiences would u stay away from an 82mm stroke in an older case like mine?.someone has suggested a 78mm (at most)crank to me and go bigger on the bore.they suggested that instead of me making my 2110 with the 82 crank.its making me second guess the strength of an older case.thanx Sean...

do they ever fail at the ereas that get ground,
@TheEZGZ8 жыл бұрын
+Mustie1 Not anymore than other spots on the case. I have still seen plenty of other failure's due to stroking though. I don't think it is worth the time on these old stock cases. I built my 2 liter with a CB performance aluminum case and it went together real nice. It is beefy and raised roof. Heavy but will outlast me.

+Rusty “rustyglovebox” Glovebox No matter what I do with a VW engine I just can't duplicate the sound of your V8. Wonder how that monster would do on a twisty paved mountain road. The sound would be awesome echoing of the canyon walls.
