I built a 2110 back in the 90's which I still have today. Might do a vid? I screwed up and had the whole thing balanced before I checked the cam clearance and then ended up having to grind away the side of a cam lobe. I never thought it would last with the GB double springs on my C35 but it has. Very hard to measure that rotating clearance. Thx

Put the cam on a lathe and turn it down. Can the cam still break if you turn the cam down?

why does it look like the flats on the cam were ground in the wrong spot ?

yes a CB cam has the flat spots in the right spot , this one looks like someone took it to a bench grinder and put the flats in the wrong spots

Wow that is tight. Never knew it was that close on those big engines.

how does turning the crank OD on a lathe make the cam base circle smaller ?

Is the logic behind a .40 clearance because of a potential spun bearing taking out the engine?
@rbrtgrdn
@rbrtgrdn 3 жыл бұрын
Meaning, the clearance would be taken up and spun rods would take out a cam?

Just do a few 150 mph passes down the road and that engine will self clearance! Man that is a lot of work.. can't believe they positioned the cam so close to the crank in that thing.

We don't want any conflict within the bits and pieces..That's not a good thing..I recon .040" is a good gap but I've only done iron block stuff so I don't know the distortion those engines get when you "ask them the question"...

cool stuff buddy...wow you can hear it the cam...whoa...cool stuff indeed. my ford v6 i had a water head gasket leak into Number 1 that bend the connecting rod and started taping. during the rebuild they said i got updated head gaskets which turn out was a lie. so i bought a new rebuilt from Michigan had has the same problem within months they too lied on the thickness of there cheap head gaskets. Have you heard of any body selling bigger or thicker head gaskets for ford? i dont wanna give up on it. i think its a good motor just not the gaskets. its the lies everyone tells you when ordering parts just to get a sale.

+Robert Gwinn You can just upgrade to a MLS (Multi-Layer Steel) head gasket and they are much stronger and come in many sizes and bores. They handle clamping pressure better as well, the only thing to consider when changing gasket thickness is that it will lower or raise your compression ratio depending on thickness.

+Robert Gwinn never go to factory replacment gaskets u don't want paper head gaskets u always have same problems as before flepro or another after market gasket r better choices

After grinding and clearancing the cams, couldn't you just send them out for cryo treat to get the strength back? All these safety sallys are all woried but its not a big deal really.

I just reviewed both my 2110 engines assembly photographs, one a Berg with Carillo rods the other a DPR full circle 82 welded VW crank and neither cam was notched like that. The all come reduced in diameter forward of the middle bearing. Base circles aside, I still don't know what the operative facts are that cause such massive and necessary cam clearance. I thought base circle had to do with where the low point of the lobe is at, not the diameter of the billet blank. There will never come a day when all the possible combinations of VW engines have been assembled, since the possibilities are endless. I am not trying to be a dick here, just curious and always looking for logical explanations. It's all mechanical.

Hey darrin I don't know if you'll see this or even reply, I'm new to vws but both me and my girlfriend have one and I wanna do a motor rebuild for her car so I wanted to know if you can email me your number so that I can call you and have a conversation about a few things. Thank you so much. I love watching all your bug stuff I'm a hardcore bug fan and can't wait to get deeper into them. Thanks again
