Yep. I used to have a GLA45 before, and it was basically a car where Mercedes went "well, Americans won't buy hatchbacks, so we'll take the A class, raise it a bit, call it an SUV = success". Then AMG took the car and went "you see this nonsense? We won't have any of that, thank you = the car gets lowered again for the AMG version".

'Raised' bodies make sense when you want to make a tall, minivan-like car, but more attractive than a typical minivan. Then raising it helps simply in terms of proportions, because larger ground clearance introduces some ,,air" to the side profile visually. For example compare Peugeot 5008 or BMW X5 to minivans of similar size. However raising does not make much sense when it comes to smaller and lower cars.

Mat said it best, it's a "Responsible" Golf, for the man who loves going fast in a Golf R, but has kids and a lot of luggages. Buying this doesn't seem so stupid considering the performance and Cargo capacity, for 34 000£

Haha, about time you did a review on this. I’ve been waiting for months in it. But couldn’t wait any longer and eventually took the plunge and bought mine in March. Got to say I agree fully with your review. I knew the car was quicker to 60 than 4.8 but never thought it’d be loitering around the 4 seconds! Gotta say though that with my seat set comfortably (I’m 6’2) there ain’t a lot of room behind me, but I’m alright Jack. I love the car and would recommend at least a test drive. Keep up the great work.

It's so funny to see a nearly identical motor under the hood of a 10 year old GTI. There's a myriad of small changes over the decade like reduced friction, higher psi fuel pumps, strengthened crank and different turbos but It just goes to show how good the EA888 engine really was from the start. It's smooth, refined and powerful in all states of tune (170-310 hp). Like all motors it isn't perfect and has its "issues", but by and large it's a gem. It's almost impossible to not average 28 mpg or better even when driving aggressively in a GTI. 30-32 mpg is usually my baseline in mixed driving (even with an APR tune) and I drive pretty aggressively with a few full throttle pulls because, why not. It's fun and it's what the motor was designed for.

hamcio 319 rsq3 is heavier then the troc, and 400hp with 1700+kg isnt that inpressive but the troc is slightly heavier then the golf r

My 2019 Golf R hits an average 0 to 60 in 4.16 secs VW say 4.7 secs, these newer GPF cars with 7 speed DSG fly, after all the worries about GPF slowing the Golf R down, they are actually quicker than the older version 😀

I really like this car. I have a Golf GTI TCR and I test drove a demonstrator T-Roc R as I thought it would be a great car for my wife and also, quite a cool two car garage 😁 However, I just can't get past that cheap interior. Which is really noticeable, no matter how much fun it is to drive!

Great review Matt, thumbs up ! I really don't 'get' the fascination with SUV's though, and especially 'sporty' ones. Why buy something with doesn't handle as well as the normal equivalent hatch/saloon, is no bigger inside, is no faster (probably slower due to worse aerodynamics), is less efficient and heavier, and costs more. I honestly don't understand. 'Because I like to sit higher up' is the usual answer meh .....
