Thanks for this Thomas! I couldn't get the ball back in the bracket socket after a clutch change, the grease and 2 pry bars method worked! You're a lifesaver!

Did you do this work yourself without your van on a hoist?? Only reason I ask is I need to do this and obviously don't have a hoist. My van is stuck in my driveway and I'd like to avoid a costly tow if possible. Cheers. 😀

@@radracingfan hi, by hoist do you mean lift the engine? Or lift the van? Either way neither are required and this can be done on a driveway, unless you are particularly chunky and struggle to get underneath!

@@jimmy_jivefunk - I meant in terms of just getting the van higher to get to the area. I'm not overly big so should be ok to get underneath. I'm going to have another look today to get a better idea of what's going on with it. Its good to know that it can be done at home if its a pretty minor repair. @@radracingfan no probs mate :) yeah once you take off the protective plate under the engine, and remove the starter and solenoid, you should have enough space to work in. Good luck :)

Getting that bushing to align and go in looked like a little bear. rhkips had a pretty good tip and sounds like it should work. And isn't it nice to have someone do some work in the same area that you were. I find that it's always a pleasure :) Take care thomas...

Exactly what i was looking for. I have a 2.5tdi AXG motor( 151PS) with the auxiliary engine heater above the gearbox. All the tutorials i found were imposible to do on my T$ they were all done from the Top of the gearbox. THX a lot i subscribed!

Ray in Raleigh NC 10/12/2020 Had replaced the bushings on my 1993 Eurovan in Dec.2019 and one that you need to use a vise to put in came out of the back of the bracket. Used the method of clamp hose to install it easily as suggested by (rhkips 3 years ago (edited) For little bushings like that, I've found that a small hose clamp can compress them just enough for the vice to slide them in without much trouble; kind of like a tiny piston ring compressor! :D ) then sandwiched it between two pieces of metal (one with a hole for the ball to go into the front of the bushing) so it cannot come out the back again. Did you just try pushing the solid end of the bush through the hole first? It goes in hole-end first using finger pressure only if you warm it up in a cup of hot water 🙂

No. Closed side was facing the vice, open side was going into the metal bracket. I used a flat head screwdriver to help get the bushing started as I was closing the vice. Sorry about the confusion & lack of detail from my camera in my glasses.

Hi Thomas, I used this awesome video last fall and replaced a missing pivot shift bushing and also the ball. After a few months and barely any driving the bushing failed. Had a whole through the back of it and allowed the bushing to push through the bracket. Wish I could attach a photo. There are similar bushings in the shift linkage, so I’m assuming I used the wrong shift bushing. Also wondering if I used the wrong grease? Thanks again!

Not sure. Genuine VW bushings? Actually, I'm not even sure if aftermarket are available. Rubber / plastic friendly grease / silicone grease.

The service manual lists shifter / linkage adjustment procedures... I'm still at work, but can send you info once I'm at home later tonight (if you don't have a service manual).

Special tools are listed, but adjustment can be done without them. When the shifter linkage is adjusted correctly... the shifter will sit in the neutral position of the 3 & 4 "gate". If you have to "slightly" push the shifter down to get into reverse, then the shifter is not sitting quite right in the neutral position of the 3 & 4 gate. The PDF shows the main adjustment clamp (first image) and the reverse lock out pin (spring loaded) in the second image. There isn't much to adjust, aside from the first image (the clamp that clamps the main shifter rod that goes to the front)... as everything else is bushings that hold the assembly or the balls that the assembly pivot on. fkh161.ca/VW/EV/EVShifter.pdf Some more pdf's / info: fkh161.ca/VW/EV/EVShifter001.pdf fkh161.ca/VW/EV/EVShifter002.pdf fkh161.ca/VW/EV/EVShifter003.pdf fkh161.ca/VW/EV/EVShifter004.pdf fkh161.ca/VW/EV/EVShifter005.pdf If you study the layout / linkage, think about what you need to do to get better 1st gear access... you should be able to figure out what / where to adjust. Again, there isn't much to adjust. If nothing helps, no matter what, then the problem might be inside the transmission.

They are quite solid, but should flex.

Awesome buddy.. enjoyed the video. Don't suppose you have one doing the same on a 2001 2.5tdi CARAVELLE?? Because of the air conditioning and the rear heaters there's pipes, tubes and wires everywhere. Grrrr. Any advice? Is it still easier to do from underneath??. Thanks buddy. 👍👍

I gave it a go from underneath yesterday ( as the top looks like the old M25 and Watford gap chucked in together) gave up after an HR.. yeah I'm a quitter .lol. put starter etc back but Gona try again tomoza as foned up VW, couldn't give me price until looked at ( I have to pay for the priveledge :-((..). Worried about overtightening in Ali tho.. u know what it's like.. the more u fiddle with it the more damage u can do.. oohhh err missus.😱. Silicone grease... rubber grease... any grease that is rubber friendly.
