No the 1.9 tdi's have this characteristic sound. Some call it knocking some call rattling some call misfire like you. It is loud and rattly but very reliable (the sound issue was made better in the latter generations like PD and CR)

In a Bulli Transporter it is not the speed. It is the feeling for the speed ^^. I drive a T6 Transporter 2.0 TDI 7 DSG with 150HP. Its only 20kph more. Except there is a smaller car (combi etc) in front of me. 207kph is my PB. In my old company there was a T5 with the BiTurbo. 2 persons, 2,7tons, 236kph. That was sick...
