VY Commodore ignition switch fixed

Ignition switch spring broken but I fixed it before thinking to film sorry. If you dont understand just ask and I'll answer or update the clip if needed. I say you might not need to remove the key cylinder but think it does need removing. If you have the same problem as I had and the ignition doesnt return to the on position after starting your can it's the spring. I held the spring with pliers and bent the broken bit with a shifter but found it's best to put the spring back on with the fixed bit down so the unbroken bit locks into the hook bit. Hope it helps and saves you money. Very easy just dont loose any bits in the switch.

Thanks mate worked a treat cutting the spring shorter and bending it back so it hooks back tight into the nylon housing, the spring is harder to get back in because it spreads a bit when taken out so when cutting and bending the spring back into position i cut it a bit shorter then pulled it back with screwdriver and it slotted back in and nice and tight. cheers 😂

Nice one mate. My key jammed today and looks like the exact same thing. I couldn't turn the car off! I ended up taking the connectors off the left hand side to stop the car. I'm now looking and learning how to fix it. Great vid. Love the burnout in the background at 10:30.

good vid .Had s lad help me tow my ignition locked car we dropped the steering rack but b4 doing this old m8 pulled this apart i thought he destroyed it.No HE just left it in my console while im left here learning how to put it back in.Im in the process of redoing a complete ignition and reflashing a new map key as its much cheaper than a lock smith...good video thx.My ignition had to be drilled out as i couldnt turn to acc with steering lock on and no key.

cheers mate my vz just did this had to jump the start relay to get home and take the main fuse out to turn it off

You do need to remove the ignition, as you can't slide the switch out of its spot while the ignition is in it. I was also having a bit of trouble but it was because while I was messing around with it I had knocked that internal switch back up, make sure it's in the down position before reinstalling the barrel.

Hi there ,, I have an 2004 VZ and I thought I had a crook starter motor issue so I thought before I went to the trouble of pulling the steering rack out to drop it down to change the starter I thought id check on the relays first so replaced the starter relay and it did actually start as I had an issue where it would start and then not start then go ok for a week then no start when i turned the key. I checked a video on KZbin and said to cross the starter relay block and if it dosent start or engage then its definitely the sterter or the solenoid on the starter in any case i have to take starter out to repair it or replace the whole starter. With a looped wire with 2 male pins I crossed where the top and the right of it where the relay goes in with a loop wire and had the ignition on and the car started. Ok rewind to 2 years ago in the vz i had to replace the ignition barrel as the original key kept falling out of the barrel as I was driving so I put a new barrel in it but I didnt change the ignition switch and all was good until the car wouldnt start just recently. Thanks for this this video as I did not want to change the ignition switch itself when i put the new barrel in as I thought there was another screw on the other side and didnt know there was a locator pin then the original one screw keeps the switch all together with that torx bit you used. So if the ignition switch does not make it go well I'll just hook up a start button and run it to where the relay for the starter relay is. Thanks again m8 I owe yu a beer or 3 🍺🍺🍺. thanks, yeh that stumped me haha but auto shops and wreckers were saying its a sealed unit and needed another one, wasnt sealed and very easy to fix so TRIED to do a video ;)

i just replaced it completely with a new one about 30 bucks on ebay..and you must remove the lock cylinder otherwise the switch wont go back on,,i tried it ..

How do you get it out when the steering lock is engaged. My key broke off and I can disengage it.

im not sure? if you have enough key for the tumblers you may be able to turn it with a screw driver a bit then push something through the hole to release the lock and pull it out. let me know how you go 😃
