As a young amateur pianist, I often stick away from such beautiful repertoire as this because I feel it intimidating because typically the only recordings I hear are virtuosic almost mechanical performances that (sometimes) almost border the edge of non-musicality. Your sincere, emotional, refreshing, pure, and open, inviting tempos remind my of Schweitzer's organ recordings & remind us that the great composers didn't want (I assume) their music to be only in the hands of conservatoire mechanical technicians - but in the prayerful & pious, joyful, fun hands of musicians! That being said, I hope to one day have some piano skills even nearing Busoni or Liszt... God bless you and your fantastic, inspiring music! A genius interpreter, a modern Schweitzer!

Thank you, a pleasant experience watching and hearing this music. I really like the candelabras and lighting. The music is deceptively difficult to play properly. Your performance is magnificent with much to admire. These Mozart sonatas sound great on a modern piano (as well any on any other instrument). They're so solid, so strong, understated and well constructed. Not so loud, not so much with virtuosic, visual fireworks. Is it easier to play these Mozart sonatas on a clavichord or easier to play a Prokofiev sonata on a modern piano? I love them both, but I think the Mozart is more challenging. I love the clavichord on this recording. You are a brave man to play Mozart on this instrument. But the risks paid off, a huge success. A triumph of technique and mental strength. Outstanding success, thank you!

Love this interpretation (alongside with Tiffany) But this is the perfect interpretation based on historical tempi. Especially the First and Third Movement.

Bravo ! Maestro ! - I confess I have sometimes harboured doubts about where your loyalty lay, over the last year or so, but now here you are demonstrating your expertise, and dare I say love of the most sensitive Keyboard instrument - the Clavichord, as superbly and insightfully as ever. You are surely one of the greatest exponents and ambassadors for the instrument and its music ever. Thank you, and may you long continue !

Hi Bill, it is not about loyalty to an instrument... I would never ever trade the clavichord for any other instrument, but at the end it is only a ... tool. If one wishes to play Beethoven and Schubert, ... the pianoforte is there if you wish or not. And I truly needed the time on that instrument to adapt myself.

It is so refreshing to hear these works on clavichord. Very beautifully played! Mozart stole the first theme of the Adagio from Haydn's 12 variations on E-flat major, Hob XVII:3.

After watching your videos, I have several videos regarding your instrument and research: 1. At what tuning is your clavichord set to? My assumption is about 409-410 Hz. 2. What is the temperament? 3. Watching your video on the tempo of this sonata's 3rd movement, would this same technique be applied to his orchestral music? Do you know the specific metronome markings? 4. Are you planning to do a video on Bach's tempo? Anything on tuning and pitch in the 18th century? Would love to hear back from you. Your craftsmanship is astounding, and I deeply admire you for such.

Thanks for the nice words! I wish KZbin enabled easy search in the video library, or at least, more clear presentation on the homepage, like one would have on a blog page. Let me just give you some videos and playlists that might be interesting for you to watch. So yes, I talk a lot on tempo, late 18th c, Bach (there is not really a big difference I believe), metronome markings (a long term series with Lorenz Gadient), temperament (also in the series on CPEBach), and recently I did a full video on tuning my clavichord in detail. So really quick first your questions: 1. it is indeed around 404-406 2. Temperament = Werckmeister 1707 (latest temperament he made posthumus)= Wohltemperirte Harmonia (what's in a name...?) which basically is flattening all fifths 1/12 (yes, that is very close to Equal temperament). CPEBach is interesting in that regard as well, you'll find the videos in the playlist below. I like this for music from Bach and later. 3. If I talk in that video on the double beat use of the metronome, yes, there is to me no doubt that has been the case for most metronome speed indications we have. As Lorenz Gadient has shared with us, there are early editions on Mozart, like that of Vincent Novello, that for sure are single beat, but then, one sees exactly the half of the speed as with MM of Czerny, Beethoven, Moscheles, Hummel, ... Lots to be said about this! 4. I did a lot. I'll include also a series on the sinfonias (these were lives, practicing from scratch). Don't hesitate to ask! I don't have the truth, but what I can do is share the thought process, always remembering that the music we study is very long ago written, so who can claim having 'the' truth. But... that is the fascinating part. Imagine we really knew it all ! tuning my clavichord; kzbin.info?o=U&video_id=vz75ZErVNGM CPEBach in pieces: kzbin.info/aero/PLackZ_5a6IWVNgSyw1SU_8qsmvqjwBqSU On tempo research: kzbin.info/aero/PLackZ_5a6IWU1zXuo_Qx-YrCCtaJcBiPO The sinfonias series kzbin.info/aero/PLackZ_5a6IWVD8MFyQX7laUvZavkSIH8j some more tempo videos kzbin.info/aero/PLackZ_5a6IWVP1Nb_Zxr-RfFHX62Nz9iQ Remember you can always go to the homepage on youtube and use the search option there. That gives most of the time the result you want! best! Wim

The Adagio is so beautiful and also very well played and interpreted! Is the Adagio played in accordance with a metronom mark or is it a free choice of tempo? I have the feeling that it could benefit from being played slower than in the video. Keep it up! :-)
