Thank you for viewing. My name is Frank Iosue. I am a Poet and a lover of poetry. I produced this video tribute to the poetry of the great British-born poet, W. H. Auden ( February 21, 1907 - September 29, 1973 ). Taken from original recordings, he reads one of his most famous, influential and highly-regarded poems, "In Memory Of W. B. Yeats", which was published in 1939.
Wystan Hugh Auden was born in York, England to a professional middle-class family. He grew up in, and near, Birmingham. He attended various independent ( or public ) schools, and studied English at Christ Church, Oxford. After a few months in Berlin in 1928-29, he spent five years ( 1930 to 1935 ) teaching in British private preparatory schools, then travelled to Iceland and China to write books about his journeys.
Auden moved to the United States in 1939, and became an American citizen in 1946, retaining his British citizenship. He taught from 1941 to 1945 in American universities, followed by occasional visiting professorships in the 1950s. From 1947 to 1957, he wintered in New York and summered in Ischia, Italy; from 1958 until the end of his life he wintered in New York ( in Oxford in 1972-73 ) and summered in Kirchstetten, Lower Austria.
A poet, playwright, critic, and librettist, Auden exerted a major influence on the poetry of the 20th century. He won the Pulitzer Prize for his book, "The Age of Anxiety: A Baroque Eclogue", which features four characters of disparate backgrounds who meet in a New York City bar during World War II. Auden received a National Book Award in Poetry for "The Shield of Achilles" in 1956. The National Book Committee awarded him the National Medal for Literature in 1967.
I know you will enjoy this powerful poem, and the distinctive quality of Auden's voice as he reads it. "In Memory Of W. B. Yeats" stands as a testament to his poetic craftsmanship, his unique sensibility, his intellect and his artistry. I hope you will enjoy the video, and enjoy this outstanding poetic work.
Along with the audio of the reading of the poem by Auden, I have provided the text of the poem and attendant imagery to enhance the experience. ( Note: The text used in this video is the text found in all of Auden's volumes, including Collected Poems, and in Anthologies....I decided to leave this standard text of the poem intact...but, be advised that what he reads in the audio ( for whatever reason ) is a bit different, in some sections of the poem, from that of the standard published text. )
Please feel free to leave a comment. Thank you for viewing.

Hearing the voices of these great poets read their work makes their poems truly live. I especially loved Auden's line "Mad Ireland hurt you into poetry." Your videos are a great resource!
