Schubert would be proud and amazed of his popularity today. Kempff was one of the first players of bring Schubert from the past to these days, the music it's not a competition, all it's about feelings.

What a dramatic piece, beautifully played by Kempff. This one really grows on you.

On sent la finesse, l'humilité et la magnanimité de ce maître à travers ce chef-d'œuvre de Schubert. De la grande musique jouée par un grand bonhomme...

Schubert - Sonata in A minor, Op. 42 D.845 My favourite :)

I suspect I like Kempff's Schubert much better than his Beethoven which often seems overly restrained to me. The first movement here doesn't shy away from the chaos and craziness that Schubert flavors it with.

How could be possible those time differences? Many version of this sonata have 36 to 40 minutes and W. Kempff play in just 29 minutes? Is it complete?
@giovanni69789 жыл бұрын
Kempff plays faster than the others. "Tempo" is different.
@fueronporquetenianelsaturn96328 жыл бұрын
+Giovanni Maineri No ... I have both versions and W.Kempff is 10% faster, but the difference is more than 10% 29 minutes vs 38 minutes 30% ! Try by yourself... compare...

Crumbs! Much to fast and light (Lilac Time!). This was not what the angst ridden Schubert would have wanted. Listen to Richter and spot the difference.

Nick Ashton-Jones I actually play this piece, and If you have actually seen the score you will notice that the tempo marking is Moderato. You will also notice that the time signature is Alla Breve (or Cut Time), hence if played with metronome, the metronome should be around 80 half notes per minute for the first movement or 160 quarters, that is. This performance is more around 90 quarters for the first movement (Which I find more appropiate to the character of the piece, moreover, playing the 16ths on the development is very difficult at any speed over 120 qpm). You also have to take into account that the second movement is marked Andante and not Adagio or Largo, so it shouldn't be as slow. I hope you have no complaints regarding the last two movements as that would be ridiculous. This said, it is very likely that Schubert would have something closer to this tempo in mind when composing the piece rather that that of Richter's version. So please abstain from wrongly assuming what Schubert would have wanted and stick to saying that you like Richter's version better.

+René Villarreal L. R. I agree too... I have listening both Richter and Kempff versions, and I prefer this one (Kempff)... I like Richter in Beethoven, but I was near sleeping went listened the sonata 845 on his hands. Sorry for my poor English

+Nick Ashton-Jones How do you know what Schubert would have wanted? Tempi are suggestions, not rigid commandments. It always amazes me that people think there is one adagio or one allegro, or one way the composer wanted the work played.

+Nick Ashton-Jones - Kempff is a little faster, but there are more than that... Kempff have cut some passages... he made some changes. His versions is somehow cutted. Try both, compare. 29 minutes vs 39 minutes... this is a big defference, 30%

Schubert was not simply "angst ridden". And nobody's got "the truth".

Yo rarísimas veces escucho Schubert porque me aburre soberanamente, y viendo todos los comentarios sobre el tempo y como puede llegar a ser aburrido si se toca de otra forma, me doy cuenta que no soy el único que piensa así.
