The Generalized Occupational Aptitude Test, or G.O.A.T, is a standardized test given to all vault dweller residents upon reaching the age of 16. The test is meant to reveal the interests and possible career paths for dwellers as they reach adulthood. But what exactly is it? And does it have any real purpose within Fallout's lore? Let's talk about it. W.T.F is a G.O.A.T?

It’s more accurate than most personality tests I’ve taken. And I for one look forward to fixing jukeboxes, operating the laundry cannon, and making sure everyone in the vault is loyal.

Explosives giving waste management is probably a reference to putting firecrackers like cherry bombs in a cloged toilet and then putting a heavy weight on the seat to force the explosion down the pipe, thus clearing the blockage. Something that only works with steel toilets with a seal on the seat. Don't ask me how I know about that.

The whole 3 tag skills thing leads to some amusing results with the G.O.A.T. with an example being a Fry Cook with explosives as a tag skill. But I always have difficulty on question 10. Why is that question so hard to decide on the answer for? I end up giving up and going with option 3 for it.

i accidentally deleted an honestly really good comment of mine, but i'll try to remember most of it and improvise the rest. unfortunately i'm not as creative rn as i was that one night when i came up with all of this. so first off, the G.O.A.T. is an awesome idea, but totally underdeveloped. let's not even mention the totally random job assignments in the end, the only good thing i can get out of it is how it recommends realistic jobs for a teenie. wouldve been super weird to start as a surgeon for the vault after finishing high school. but i think the job titles are both irrelevant to the game and mostly to the lore and setting, so we're safe to ignore them. would be interesting to start the game with corresponding melee weapons, though, imagine a cook with a rolling pin starting to beat the crap out of those radroaches or a janitor using his broomstick (unfortunately didnt make it as a melee weapon even in new vegas). things i find great about it as is: - humour - influence on starting stats - you get a feel for the game before it even really starts - the kids start working early - multiple choice things i'm fine with: - it doesnt even need any other aspects, ie a physical test where you need to run, jump and hit or whatever, but more would be welcome (wont be discussed here tho) - taking a test that changes you is a bit game-y, so it has to happen early enough, for you to not have actually used any of your skills that it would influence, so aside from the moments as a baby and some talking scenes, this is it, now you're an adult. but let's be real, we all want to get the game started things i find underdeveloped: - it should be a longer test - it should have slightly more options to click - you shouldnt be allowed to reskill yourself just like that - it should both test for tagged skills and increase your starting skills accordingly - it SHOULD totally be biased towards a vault life the things i'd change i will get into far more detail in my next comments replying to this one so i dont lose all this work AGAIN

*it should be a longer test with more options to click* you will soon see that i really want the G.O.A.T. to be somewhat meaningful for the game. there's no need for a personality questionnaire with 60 parts to be so solved, but it should definitely be long and detailled enough for people to feel like they are indeed playing a role here and also so that it has some influence at least on the early game. if you're a big nerd in highschool, you should come out with lots of smarts but not necessarily as much brawns. if you're the type of person who just about slipped through but has many friends in return and has a silver tongue, the G.O.A.T. should be able to reflect that. simply put: you either make a great G.O.A.T. or you can ignore it altogether, as did new vegas. i am for making it great. *you shouldnt be allowed to reskill yourself just like that* i mean wtf is it even good for then, especially if most people play to fully max out anyway? grow some bawls and make it permanent. *it should both test for tagged skills and increase your starting skills accordingly:* like, duh. you arent just your genes (S.P.E.C.I.A.L.) anymore when you graduate from high school, you have a whole personality with strengths and weaknesses, interests and talents. not getting any extra skill points for your answers just seem like a massive missed opportunity, especially considering that you're reading through all this stuff only to be rewarded with a tag that you immediately forget about or change anyway. no. you should get 1 extra skill point per corresponding answer aside from the point you gather towards determining your skill tag. *it SHOULD totally be biased towards a vault life:* survival skill make no sense there, just as much as guns (small and big) and explosives. i'd argue that even the sneak and lockpick skills should be less represented bc vault residents are supposed to be goody-two shoes. the single most important skills that i'd imagine kids in vaults would learn are science, medicine, repair and speech. so taking just the new vegas skills i'd sort them by importance like this: + + science, medicine, repair and speech + barter, energy weapons, melee weapons and unarmed - sneak and lockpick - - survival, guns and explosives so you'd still have a well rounded schooling system (++) and various hobbies (+) any vault dweller would participate in, but you'd also have some activities only some secretly mischievous bad boys (-) would do and aspects that just genuinely barely if ever would come up in a vault. i would further "bias" the test in the hopes of making it even more realistic, that whenever the normal/good skills come up as options, those should (almost) always look like the normal, sane option, whereas the bad/abnormal skills from the POV of a vault dweller would therefore also usually be the funny option, the overkill, the break with reality or 4th wall. this does not include other fairly extreme options, like trying to talk down a wild beast would probably result in an extra boost to speech and two points for figuring out which skill to tag. also, certain answers in the current test make fairly little sense for a teenager to say, even a nerdy kid in the question with the crazed scientist. in that case such an answer should also count as double.

here are some examples and how i came up with them: *number of answers:* they should be increased by at least one, but there isnt really a reason why every question should have the same number of possible answers and if you ask me, the limit should be how many fitting/witty/funny answers the devs (in this case me lol) can come up with. if that's a low number, the question probably just sux, tho and should be replaced by a better one. *number of questions:* the game already has 9 relevant questions, 10 if you wanna count the overseer one. personally, even when playing the game for the first time, still not being that great at english and also super excited about the real meat of the game, the G.O.A.T. felt too short. while yes, i already wanna increase the number of possible answers which automatically increases the length of texts to be read and time spent on it all, judging by the amount of blood, guts and gore in the game and mature themes especially in new vegas, it's fair to assume that the main player base wont be kids so it can easily be increased by a bit. let's be real, if some addy-kid played this, they'd just spam random answers anyway, so it wont matter to them if they spent 10 or 20 seconds clicking randomly. that said, one logical option would be 13, the number of skills in new vegas. so every question would be themed around one of the skills. this would maybe be troublesome with the point i made earlier about how the new test would be biased, but i think that could be avoided. for example, you shouldnt have the option to gather many points for the explosives skill as i established earlier, so the number of answers with that skill in mind would definitely be low. but that doesnt mean that an explosives themed question couldnt still make the explosives related answer to that look sane or in general sth a vault dweller would do. an example i came up with on the spot would be sth about the great war. great war -> nuclear yolocoaster -> big booms -> explosives skill. so that would be the theme. now the answer could be 4 sane or even smart ones related to the school related skills and the explosives one would be sth along the lines of "i blew myself up so many times that i have become resistant to it" or "don't look away, this is your one and only chance to see a mushroom cloud up close and personal" or whatever else. this way we dont "forget about" certain skills, we just make them out to be super uninviting or unattractive options, or at least we imply that it would be viewed as such in the vaults. this kind of story telling goes a long way, if you ask me. *now some concrete maths:* assuming we have 13 questions and at least 5 answers for each, we'd be left with 65 different answers. there are 4 (++) and (+) skills, 2 (-) and 3 (- -) skills. so if we simply weigh them accordingly, we could have twice as many answers for each (++) skill as (-) and twice as many of those than (- -) and thrice the number of (+) than (- -). this would leave us with an approximate ratio of 1:35 for the rarest skills. we could almost fit twice that in 65 answers, we'd be left with 5 extra. distribute those among the questions where we have too many interesting options, and we're golden.

*some thoughts:* - you could start with 8 extra skill points and a tag (+15) in whatever you favor among science, medicine, repair and speech. even adding 10 S.P.E.C.I.A.L. points in a corresponding way would result only in 30 plus those 23 skill points. 53 isnt that crazy for a specialised build, unless the game has a super weird focus on one of those very skills early on, enabling unintended bypasses or whatever. but only 8 of these would be from the new G.O.A.T. that i just made up. really, in new vegas 45 skill points are received for free at level 1 by selecting the 3 tag skills (1 of which would stem from the G.O.A.T.'s results) plus the 35 S.P.E.C.I.A.L. points resulting in various amounts of extra skill points (strength resulting in 30 extra if maxed out, whereas maxing out luck (or level 9) results in 39, INT and PER giving you 90 if maxed out and everything else giving you 60 if maxed out). and if you're that concernted about those few points at game start, just think of level 1 as having levelled up from level 0 (a statless kid). on a sidenote, i think it's weird that vault dwellers all start at level 1 as adults. really? did you gather no experience at all in school, or doing quests for others (chores and your job)? - the G.O.A.T. still doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things, but i think that's because the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats are too heavily weighted at first. starting out with 35 points is a LOT if you ask me, especially considering that all of them further give you skill points. considering that these are supposed to be the base genes of any character, maybe we should nerf them into giving only 2 points for each skill they align with (maybe only 1/5th or 1/6th for luck) and only give new players 20-25 to distribute so that early game they influence a bit less. from what i heard the newer game already have so many ways to max out your base stats that they cant really be classically viewed as "unchangable, irrelevant stats" anymore, making only the skills count, but that they are part of the game and you will want to max them some time, too, or at least get somewhat close to it. buying implants is one reliable way, then there are traits and perks and quest rewards. this could be further built upon. we shouldnt forget that a teenager isnt at his max strength, endurance, charisma, intelligence, or even luck. heck, even perception and agility can be trained. hearing when the train comes from the train tracks is one classic learnable skill, but also various kinds of martial arts moves require years of training to perfect and all of this could be respresented in additional skill points being distributed. - ... [got lazy, skipped and may do later. let's go do some examples now] *some example questions and answers:* *fallout 3 G.O.A.T. expanded and improved by me:* [the frenzied vault scientist one] -> [super nerdy answer that's unfitting of a teenie] [2x science] -> yeah? up yours, too! [speech] -> ko him [melee] -> sneak away [sneak] -> turn it off before anyone gets hurt [energy weapons] [the spreading infection one] -> amputate [melee weapons] -> scream for help [speech] -> medicate [medicine] -> restrain and watch [science] -> "just sleep it off, black coffee/trail mix [low survival skill needed] in the morning will make you feel better in no time" and send him on his way [survival] [the lost lil thief one] -> hug [speech] -> confiscate [unarmed] -> steal [sneak] -> you recognise various items from the overseer's safe and the armory. return those items and leave a letter to make them improve security [lockpick] -> you do a quick hair analysis, but the best you can do is a 50% match with a lady. you reunite them, but dont mention the father who might've given those things to him. [science] [the baseball one] -> pitcher [explosives] -> catcher [big guns, guns now, survival would be better] -> hitter [melee] -> football [unarmed] -> medic [medicine] -> coach [speech] -> owner [barter] [the granny assassination one] (this one has to be changed a lot) -> kill [guns] -> plead [barter] -> ask for tesla cannon [2x energy weapons] -> steal back the stuff she's owed by the resident [sneak] -> give her the medications that she always forgets to take [medicine] [the old guy locked in one] (this one also wasnt very good) -> use bobby pin [lockpick] -> disassemble door from the outside [repair] -> laser pistol on lock [energy weapons] -> talk him into leaving [speech] -> pry the door open with a crowbar [melee weapons] [the mutated hand in stomach one] -> brain bullet [guns] -> anti mutagen agent [medicine] -> prayer [barter] -> precision laser [energy weapons] -> you can always use an extra hand helping you finally fix that old radiation leak in the energy supply of vault [2x repair] [the comic book one] -> trade [barter] -> rob [guns] -> steal [sneak] -> ko drops [medicine] -> start a rumour about grognak the barbarian's author being a communist, hope that he gets rid of his comicbook, save it from the trash bin and keep it for yourself [speech] [the prank one] -> loosen pipes [repair] -> firecracker [explosives] -> sugar pills [medicine] -> open the shaver and manipulate the wattage so that next time it shocks him [lockpick] -> replace the glass shower walls with holograms so that next time he showers he floods the whole bathroom [science] [got tired now. hmu if you're curious about my other ideas or if you have your own. if you wanna make a mod, feel free to use any of this. note to myself: i've saved a text file in my dropbox with some notes]
