My first Mercedes was a 1984 300D I bought new from the MBZ dealer in Freiburg, Germany. I had it shipped back to San Francisco and put 250,000 miles on it in 12 years. It had the indestructible non-turbo 5 cylinder diesel engine and 4 speed manual transmission. What an amazing machine, perhaps the perfect automobile. I have since owned 2 W 124 300E’s, and still own my 1990 300CE coupe as well as a 2000 W210 E430 and 2001 E430 Sport. But nothing gave the feeling of that 300D under full throttle on the freeway. Cruising at 80 mph it felt like a Mack truck, solid, safe and secure.

I believe you already got shock or heartbroken by these so called friendly environmental materials in those cars. My 2000 SLK230 R170 interior decals were all worn out. However, the older MB cars were still strong till now:

I do aree, absolutely. I had a brand new/ 240D: in 1981, simply unforgettable.

My dad had the 280E .... Bought it new in 82 ..... Traded it in, in 2008 for an E350 .... It outlived him up until 2018 ....

I truly admire your collection. The Benz is king. However, i am pleasantly surprised that you knew that the 1.8i was the best engine to have in the BMW line up. This advice was served to me by a Master BMW mechanic. What more can one say about the Toyota Hilux. What a brilliant choice you have.

These cars just needed routine maintenance and not much to break down. Everything manual like locks, windows, etc. Solid controls, buttons. Not the flimsy cheap plastic used today or electronics that break down, hard to fix.
