Definitely one of the cleanest W126s I've seen. Sounds pretty quick too! How does the acceleration of this compare to that of a 6-cylinder S-class like an S320 W140 or a 300SE W126? Because I like cars like this and I'd love a 1999 or older S-class after I finish college but I think I need one that's a little more economical and cheaper on maintenance. The bigger the engine, the more expensive to maintain so something like an S600 would be overkill. A 4.2L V8 like this is as big as I'd go.

I like the looks of the W220 and I found that even the W220 S500 is good on gas for a V8, but I heard horror stories about them being maintenance nightmares and unreliable compared to older generations. I would consider one if it had some kind of warranty, because they have lots of nice modern features and probably are nice to drive, but I don't think I can trust them as much.

Yeah I personally wouldn't trust a 2000 or newer S-class or really any one for that matter and sure enough, the consumer reviews on Edmunds of the 2000 S-class said they are very unreliable. I think with Mercedes, an E-class like a 300E or E320 would ultimately be more practical but with S-classes, a 420SEL seems good if I don't drive ultra long distances. Good power but not overwhelming, and probably much cheaper on maintenance than any W140. And worked on by a MB specialist shop of course!

Depends on which Mercedes you're talking about. The old W126s are one of the easier MBZ cars to maintain and repair. The W140 on the other hand will cost you more.
