We don't have statistics to determine how rare this choice was, but without a shadow of an exaggeration, we can conclude that it was a 1 in 1000 choice. Or rarer. Getrag transmission, manual, five-speed, in the W140 generation S Class. Great by the way, with a typically sporty layout with one to the left and back, two forward and three to back. Most of the gears shifted here stay flush, which supposedly used to be useful for racing drivers on tracks, but works just as well for normal city driving. Shifting gears like this is a pleasure... as long as you like to shift gears yourself. In a limousine, it used to be that every chauffeur did it himself, but now he expects the car to do it for him.

Wonderful car!!! I still remember when the W-140 was launched (1991), and even now, when I see one (not easy but not impossible), the teenager I was in 1991 (I was 14) comes back and says: "WOOOWWWW!!! Sehr schönes Fahrzeug! Das manuelle Fünfganggetriebe gab es ja nur für die M 104-Motoren mit 2,8 und 3,2 Liter, Vier- oder Fünfgangautomatik gab es für diese beiden Motoren gegen Aufpreis. Diese Wahl zwischen drei Getriebeoptionen (M 5/A 4/A 5) war stets eine Besonderheit des M 104 (im 124/129/140/202)! Wobei ab Mitte 1996 die S 320 serienmässig zunächst die Viergangautomatik erhielten, wahlweise gegen Aufpreis aber auch mit der Fünfgangautomatik (ab diesem Zeitpunkt mit elektronischer Steuerung) bestellt werden konnten. Schaltgetriebe ab diesem Zeitpunkt nur noch für den S 280 als Serienausstattung lieferbar, auf Wunsch gab es (06/1996) für den S 280 ausschliesslich nur noch die elektr. Fünfgangautomatik, welche dann in allen anderen Typen Serie war.
