Have been driving my W140 300SE for 1.5 years. Like others are saying - the car is pretty easy to work on. Proper German engineering. I'm fascinated with the build quality too - under the hood there are so little plastic parts - valve cover is like it should be - metal, power steering pump reservoir - metal, air filter box - metal. Not cheap plastic shit they use in today's cars.

I've owned over 60 cars of which 4 w140 and i regreted each time i sold a w140. I just purchased my 5th w140 a 1998 S420 black/black and this one is a keeper. Nothing compares to that driving experience. My backup car is a 1995 w124. Both cars are absolutely gorgeous but very different in what they offer.

I was lucky when I purchased my 95 OM603.971 W140 with 265k miles on the other coast of the USA. Bought it for $3k The previous owner sent me a walk around video and and underbody video. Once he said the engine only had 60k miles since rebuild, I was sold. I flew in and drove back 3k miles home. Since then, junkyards have come in handy. With everything, I have spent maybe $3k getting the car just right. I had to do some engine work as the vacuum pump exploded on the way. It almost destroyed the chain rails, but it made it here. Also had to replace the evaporator, tires, and tail lights. Only way to work on these cars is DIY. Anything else and you’ll be broke!

I have a 1992 600SEL with the M120 V12, it's by far the most complicated car I've ever owned and worked on, but I'm always impressed with the handling and level of quietness for such a large car. You're right about repair costs though, a pair of throttle bodies from MB for the 92-93 M120 motors is around $9000.

All the engines are fairly straightforward to work on with these cars. Where the nightmares tend to lay is within all the electronics and auxiliary mechanical components. Under the hood is easy. But something like changing a evap core requires complete removal of the front seats, center console, and the entire dash unit. 300 dollar part that costs around 10 grand in labor and other small misc parts that often get broken In the process. Otherwise these are very well built machines that can last many trips to the moon and back.
@HLClassics2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. The evaporator core job is borderline ridiculous. With the exception of the V12s, there's plenty of space to work in the engines of these cars. Lots can be DIY, save for the ECUs and more complex electronics.

722.6 is one of the best transmissions ever built. nonsense to call it the less reliable trans just because rebuild costs are higher
@HLClassics2 жыл бұрын
We didn't mean that it is a terrible transmission, far from it. Just more to fix if anything goes wrong. And we stand by what we believe that the 722.3/4 4-speed transmissions are relatively more reliable (or more accurately durable) than the 722.6.

I will say you're wrong about the 722.6 as long as it's fluid, conductor play and wiring harness plug are changed they're actually a stronger more robust transmission the 722.4. especially for the more powerful models. The m119s 5-speed is rated for over a thousand foot pounds
@HLClassics2 жыл бұрын
The 722.6 is superior to the 722.5 in virtually all aspects as a 5-speed, and performs better than the 722.4 as you mentioned. However, given that these transmissions would be more than twenty years old and likely due for a rebuild soon, rebuild costs for the 722.6 exceed that for the 722.4 by a fair margin.
@johnantonopoulous63812 жыл бұрын
@@HLClassics not if they were maintained. 7 years ago I got my w202 c280 with 80k miles. I swapped the conductor plate plug and changed the fluid. I have had a turbo and about 350 who since. It currently has 250k miles and it hits redline maybe 2 times a day from a stop. The trans is perfect. If you drive normal it shifts better than my w212 e350
@jamesreckling66973 жыл бұрын
The reason for wanting the five speed is it gets better gas mileage.
@HLClassics3 жыл бұрын
For a car that weighs two tonnes, gas mileage on the 5-speed is negligible for town driving. On highway cruising you would get better mileage, but it eventually would be offset by higher transmission repair costs if you keep the car long enough.
@detonater13483 жыл бұрын

Maintenance records. Car should have years of maintenance records depending on how long the current owner has had it. Multiple owners... I wouldn't buy the car. Define multiple owners... I'd say...a W140...this is 2024 now...W140 from the 90's with.... 5/6 + owners...red flag for me. Title check...salvage or not. Now...seen it personally... insurance adjuster will total a car vs repairs and a buyer...shop...gets around that salvage title and has a clean title issued after having repairs done.
