I have a 2001 ML320 that I bought new. 151,000 miles. Always dealer serviced and 5000 mile oil change intervals. I love it and plan to keep it as long as repairs average 200 dollars or less monthly. So far I’m well below that.

I also have a ml with same vintage, it pulled a camper it’s whole life, also was a garage queen. I bought it with 111,236 miles, currently at 124,674. Trans also has been slipping. I’m doing 70 mph at 2.500 rpm. Once she gets going she just cruises. Also have all the recipes and paperwork showing the maintenance history. Does shift aggressively. Also when I park and turn the engine off the car will lurch forward. She has never left me stranded. (KNOCK ON WOOD)

I put a used transmission in my 1993 Accord wagon back in 2019. The used transmission has always slipped a little bit 3rd to 4th gear. Three years and 12k miles later, and it slips no more and no less.

My diesel Continental is being needy at the moment too. The air suspension started leaking, and then the steering rack decided it wanted in on the game so it now dumps all of it's PS juice in about 2 days while parked. Air suspension won't be a big deal to fix. The rack is not going to be fun to remove. I've also had several really bad experiences with Fox chassis racks so I might try to re-seal it myself. This could work out, or go horribly wrong. Either way its too cold to mess with it right now so the car will stay parked with a drain pan underneath until it warms up.

Any suggestions for how to maintain the gearbox so you don’t have this problem??

The rear struts really aren't that bad to do. Just get a set of harbor freight flexhead ratcheting wrenches to undo the upper bolts. Mine broke free no problem, theres covers that prevent major rusting etc. the only other tools needed are some large wrenches and ratchets to drop the lower control arms and undo lower strut bolt.

Rear shocks are not as much of a nightmare as made out to be. At least for me it wasn't. I've got a few tips to simplify the install if you have not yet done so.

I paid $400 + 220 for the new struts to a mechanic to change them, just find the correct mechanic
