Most newscasts end with a kicker - a light, often offbeat, story. Others end with one last, final check of the weather. Few, I'm sure, ended like this. Bill Beutel summarizes each of the main stories of the day, in one sentence each, and less than one minute total. This became something of a hallmark in his later years - not long after this example he would modify this so each sentence would flow into the next.
Few stations could get away with this because few of them have anchormen with the delivery and writing skills that Beutel had, even at this late stage of his career. The strength of his writing and anchoring flourished even moreso after Roger was gone, and became one of WABC's biggest strengths during the 90s.

That's a very British thing to do. Almost every BBC World News bulletin today ends with a summary of the hour's news.

I wonder if WABC-TV had a long close with credits (Shots of NYC, WABC-TV helicopter flying over etc..), much like what sister station KABC-TV out west was doing at the same time?

Why can't the news be like this today. Today you need 6 pairs of eyes to listen to it. Too much crap all over the screen that distracts everything.
