WABC-TV marks 75th anniversary: Empire State Building lighting & more

Mayor Eric Adams will declare Aug. 10 as WABC-TV Day in NYC, and the Empire State Building will be lit in WABC blue Thursday night.

I grew up with this. I remember the early broadcasts in 1968… such an influential station. My high school, Northport, won Geraldo Rivera’s “One To One” fundraiser that benefitted Willowbrook… grand prize was a performance at our high school of National Lampoon’s “ Lemmings” with Gilda Radner in the cast as well as Belushi’s debut of his Joe Cocker impersonation.

Interesting how Willowbrook "made" WABC. I seem to remember some 4-5 years before, rival WCBS's news was "made" by the Newark riots (that, plus their snapping up Mike Douglas who went back and forth with WABC's "4:30 Movie" in terms of who won in that time slot). I also seem to have found in WABC's history, they had about nine variations of the old-style "circular" test pattern as put up before signing on in the morning (the first two under its original calls).
