The new Wacom One is a fun pen display to draw with a needed screen upgrade but it lacks some of the features of its predecessor at the same price point.

I'm glad the market drove them to finally offer some budget items. But truth is, the reason I left wacom wasn't just the price, price was just a great bonus. For me, it was that wacom drivers had just stopped working on me, from time to time, for a DECADE. Different builds, different versions of windows. It drove me absolutely insane. I switched to one of the cheaper ones, and sure, the software had some quirks, but it really WORKED. It didn't leave me spending hours reinstalling, uninstalling, searching forums, getting the same answers, and having none of them work.

The 2019 version of this is easy to find pre-owned on ebay, and I expect the same will happen with this one. It's easy to see why. Someone learning digital art buys one new, and then one of two things happens: either they struggle with drawing for a while and then rage-quit, or they do well and decide they need something less cramped. Either way, they put the One up for sale "lightly used", and you get a bargain.

I have actually seen more of the slightly or even unused Cintiq 16 for sale. Often people even buy the separate stand for it so it's a great deal for an almost new pen display.

I don’t see why someone on a budget or young would get this over a tab s6 lite. For drawing it performs great, and if you on a budget I bet a decent pic that runs the art apps isn’t on the cards. It’s an inch smaller screen, but you have pinch and zoom, which makes it a lot better. If you do want to hook it up to a pc you can with a $10 app. It uses the same pen tech. And it costs the same.

Literally just bought one for myself yesterday, but it wasn't easy! They are basically completely sold out everywhere in Canada! (for the 2022 version anyway) it was only by fluke my parents found a forgotten one tucked into the back of a shelf at a Staples that wasn't even in their systems stock count! Now I got to wait a month for them to come visit me cause they live in a different province 😂

The problem is that when you start doing some research you quickly get the impression you need Photoshop right from the beginning. Many beginner's buy into the idea you need expensive software to be good at digital art. While it is way more valuable to invest in knowledge and use less expensive software. I started with a Galaxy Tab S4 years ago and still haven't switched to Photoshop. So many excellent alternatives available to start with and keep on going with, even on Android. If someone already has a decent laptop, I would invest in a Huion pen display and start with something free like Krita or get Affinity Designer or Photo, Paint Shop Pro or Escape Motions Rebelle 6. That last one is still my favourite after many years.
@sloppynyuszi
@sloppynyuszi 10 ай бұрын
@@benjamina6915 Photoshop is over rated for drawing. Especially on anything smaller than a 16” screen it’s basically useless. I know Photoshop was the go to for pro artists. To be fair unless you are in a studio, you don’t need it. Freelance they’ll accept anything, as long as it works, and companies will hire you if your portfolio is nice. Even if you did it in Krita.

So I used to primarily design usign non display tablets (Started with an Intuos Pro back in 2014) and then for the past few years have been drawing on iPads. I have some XP Pen tablets but after like a year the pens stopped working properly and I did confirm it was a widespread pen issue and software really does prefer Wacom so I looked around and found the Wacom one 13" for $180 refurbed (Fantastic price!). I used it for about an hour and the inital activation force problem is starting to really be a dealbreaker for me. I thought it wouldn't be a big deal but it really is. Also no buttons on the tablet at $300 is rough. Luckily I have a Huion KD-100 which helps tremendously but without it I'd be struggling super hard to make this tablet work. Might return it and try a Kamvas 13

Good review, as always! It's a shame that Wacom pretends to be the Apple of tablets... but without the quality enough to be the Apple of tablets in low prices. At the same time they're selling some products with that high amount prices for BEGINERS other companies offers the same for less, so it means it is possible to make those tablets more accessible for everyone, just they want money for the money... So sad, Wacom! BTW, Brad, Have you reviewed the Ugee U 1600 tablet? It seems a good tablet, and cheap, and I'd like to know your opinion about it. ^^

Quality is what they do tend to have. They are stingy on the features though. But that is how they justify their product segmentation.
@fablewalls
@fablewalls 10 ай бұрын
@@tams805 I'd argue "quality" makes more difference for the bigger Wacom tablets. At 12 - 16 inches, Wacom are beat by Huion / Xenceslabs and XP Pen. Beginners are the ones who will buy a 12 inch - and quickly realise they should have bought a 16 inch minimum display but now you have a 12 inch Wacom to put up with until you save up enough again.

I was wondering, in the near future, would it be possible to review potential apps on ipad os that let your use it as a second monitor for a Windows computer, kind of like how sidecar works between mac os and ipad os? I can understand having options of not including pen or cables to the more professional oriented Cintiq Pro 27 (even if I don't agree with it, for that matter) since professionals have likely owned multiple tablets prior to switching it to a 27 inch but its absurd doing it to an entry-level model, wow.

I have had the 2019 wacom one and there are some things I'd like to say from the experience. In my country, the wacom one, huions and xp-pens of similar specs do not have a significant price different. It might be 50-60 dollars at max. Yes there is no laminated display on the 2019 version and that is probably the only thing I miss. It has a great pen, feet to prop it up to a comfortable angle, is built quite solid compared to the huion's and xppen (Yes I have used the other pen displays as well) and has lasted me quite a while without any problems. It also has a bigger 13.3. inch screen. I have never had driver issues or malfunctions. I have even travelled with it quite a bit. It is a shame that wacom removed some of the features like the feet and put a smaller display. I'd say, if you do not mind the laminated display you could probably get a good deal on the 2019 version. Also, even the 2023 version is not a bad tablet by any means (I really love the one cable connection. Lovely while travelling). If you are someone who is a working artist and needs a reliable pen display which would last you for years to come, I'd close my eyes and pick a wacom.

If you do an in-depth review of the new 12 and 13, could you please touch on the connectivity (the simple visual sheet in the packaging) doesn't get into how to select which USB-C port to use and when to use the power supply .... . For the non-tech creative person, figuring out what to connect may not be easy. In other words which of the two USB-C ports on the Wacom One can be used for the power supply and which one to connect to the computer? Thx, Brad. That plastic anti-reflective screen protector is going to turn really messy in max 2 years time and then you have to peel it off, which is not trivial and also voids your warranty. I wish wacom would use weaker glue and admit that these need to be replaced periodically.

Wacom is really falling as now, while XP-Pen, Huion and Xencelab are making pen displays of almost the same quality for more affordable prices. They still make arguably the best stylus though. PS. I'm pretty sure I'd save more just buying a Galaxy Tab S... Same pen, you can bring it with you away from the computer you need, and you can do many other things on it. Krita is on Android now and it's the same as PC version, so I'm set. Also, using my fingers directly on the screen for commands is easier for me than using shortcut buttons on the side.

If I recall this is no longer wacoms pen technology alone. They lost their hold on the tech and it became public hence many other cheap tablets and some E ink tablets CAN USE the same EMR pens. It's no longer a Wacom tech or driver being used. Even the digitizer in the screen is no longer made by Wacom but by many other Chinese companies that make them for supper cheap. These budget Wacom devices are now just overpriced items with Wacom slapped on.

You still seem confused about initial activation force. You want less of it, not more. Also Wacom Pro pens and One pens uses the same load sensor tips with 3 grams of IAF. So any difference between them is operating frequency and how driver handles the fed data (for instance, pressure levels; 4k vs 8k, are software distinctions). Wacom likes to make plenty of distictions between Pro and One in software. Remember that Wacom didn't even offer tilt function in their One/UD/Oenabled pens until recently, even though the pens never changed hardware wise. As for value proposition, something like One 13 Touch is probably the better product with multitouch layer added for $500. And I do believe Wacom One still has superior x/y grid granularity compared to Huron and other at those low price points. That makes it worth not getting all the free chotchkies and 150ish discount IMO.

The fact that the wacom one pen has two side buttons... that's an insant purchase for me. The pen, not the tablet. :)

@@AbrahamSayago Maybe that's becoming true, but it wasn't always. But as for me, I'm pretty much stuck with Wacom products as the best in class pen experience. I know, I'm super picky. I haven't tried a pen that has both the initial force activation and accuracy that I like, except wacom. Most wacom EMR pens moved to a one-button only style (i.e., the old wacom one pen, samsung pens, etc.). I'm truly glad that a new two button wacom EMR came out.

@@TropicalCyc Only Wacom? The apple pencil has one psuedo button (the double tap thing"), and the latest MS pen has one side button. There are many competitors out there! As far as huion or xp pen, I am not sure if they are able to match the IAF of wacom. I've never had a device in a local store to try out. Their mobile devices (laptops/slates) have not been interesting enough to buy into, yet. This leaves apple, microsoft, wacom, and samsung.

Unless you are really strapped for money, I don't recommend a 12" display tablet... Many people that I know complain that 12" is simply too small and then quickly upgrade their display tablet.

Id say a 12 inch tablet would be perfect for taking around anywhere. But id also say you could just get the samsung galaxy tab without havin to bworry about connecting to a device. Differences but each have their own benefits

Honestly, at this point you'd be getting a better deal by getting an earlier generation of Galaxy Tab like the S7 or S8. Unless you want/need to connect it to a PC, then Huion or XP Pen is better value. I feel Wacom has been slowly but surely getting out of touch with the market/industry over the last few years.

So if you buy online and didn't hit all the "extras" which are actually necessary, you get gipped? I mean, I guess it's nice for the 20 people that already have everything. 😜 You have sold me on the Kamvas as my first dip into pen displays.

Okay. So it having two ways to buy, the online configuration tool or the boxed route, is enough to make me not want to kick Wacom in the teeth for being a bad faith company; however, still feel like Brad was right to say--in not so many words--that this seems to be a big step backwards for them overall. Better display over all--sure, but everything else has me doubting if I'd ever buy another Wacom product ever again when their competitors are doing it just as well and for a lot less money.

My qualm with other pen displays different from wacom is that every time I ask a non KZbin artist for a recommendation is that they ALWAYS say to save up and get Wacom because their other brand pen displays broke after a year or so of using it. I love that Wacom has competition but nobody ever tests for durability, you all use it for a few days and either have to return it or store it away cause you have another higher end pen display that you love. And that’s ok, that’s your job. But yeah, how do we know those say $1000 we invest on huion/xppen will last us 4-5 years that Wacom has proven to last? And I dont expect their $200 pen displays to last me years.

I'm genuinely glad the people you know have had good experiences with the company, but in my experience, it's been the exact opposite. I've had seven different types of Wacom tablets, and only four have lasted over two years, and they were all treated very carefully. Of those four only two are still working now, one stopped working around the five year mark, and the other was essential bricked after Wacom stopped supporting it. Wacom is notorious with long time users for their poor cable connection ports that they never bothered to fix for around a decade of releases, and their customer support is horrible. Compared to that, the $60 XP Pen tablet I bought to replace my Intuos Pro M is still going strong after six years of use, and the two screen tablets I have from them are also still working fine after three and two years respectively.

I've had my Huion Kamvas Pro 13 since 2019 and it's still working fine. I've even taken it on cross-country trips and stuff (wrapped it in a small blanket and set up with a laptop in hotel rooms) and it's still going. I don't use it as much these days because I bought the 24 inch Huion at the end of last year, but a few months ago I took a trip and the 13 was crucial to my work while traveling. I guess my experience might be atypical but that's my anecdotal take.
