In this video, it was spring 2022. I had just moved to San Luis Obispo and was scouting every accessible bit of shoreline that I could find. This beach was sketchy to access, and even more sketchy to wade around on.
I think it looks so beautiful tho.
This is what it’s like, wading out on rock after rock, to get out further and further. I call it Rock Hopping. I did a lot of this in Santa Barbara and Ventura where there surf is ultra calm. Here in San Luis Obispo I must be more careful because the waves are more powerful on average. And there’s no sand to fall on. Here if you fall, it’s either on rock or in deep water.
But it’s an invigorating experience. I never feel more alert, and alive. I think it’s one of those special privileges surf fishermen get to experience and enjoy. We truly immerse ourselves in the beauty of nature. Our senses are heightened. We see the plants, birds, crabs, seals, rocks, islands, caves, sunsets, its all wonderful. If I get a bite, I’m having even more fun. Crawling around on the reef and the rocks is scary but also a treasure at the same time.
You can see in this video I’m wearing surf board booties and swimming trunks with my fishing tights underneath. Great for rock hopping on a hot summer day. The booties can be slippery as hell on the mossy rocks or vegetation. I’d be better off wearing spikes or maybe felt bottom booties.
In this area there is no sand so I don’t expect to catch halibut, only rock fish, cabezon, and maybe a lingcod. Black perch if I switch to cut bait. This spot looks amazing; protected, rock structure. After several attempts, surprisingly, I never got a bite here. Something tells me I should keep trying.
