Yeah, it's amazing how well they're able to navigate through correct landing patterns, getting around other air traffic, and navigating through all kinds of weather or at night. Also, when seeing this landing video, this aircraft seems to be even closer above the Manhattan skyscrapers than other NY landing videos I've seen. One thing I do know is how many choppers are flying around the skyscrapers of Manhattan, the Manhattan tour helicopters, emergency rescue/hospital helicopters, charter shuttle helicopters (to LaGuardia), news choppers, privately owned choppers. I also saw a video of the Manhattan tour helicopter and it didn't seem to be flying any lower than this aircraft was around 3:00. I'd thought before that the descending aircrafts are still higher up than all the choppers whirling around above the skyline, but I'm not so sure now after seeing this video. It's amazing how they are all able to navigate around each other without even any near run-ins

Hi, it is amazing each city is set up with control centers other than the control towers that handle the Airport Vincinity around the airport ie.....for example New York Center, Miami Center, Chicago Center and so forth, so when a airline takes off its handled by the control tower.....when its about 3,000-7,000 feet the control tower tells the pilot to turn his radio to a different channel and then that cities center of aircraft controllers handle the planes direction and flight path to the next destination along the route that the pilot files before he even takes off as he plans the flight in breifing...for instance a plane going to from New York to Chicago is handled usually two control centers and they tell the pilots what altitude and speed to fly , they are the ones who keep the skys safe..along with the pilots too...

This video prompts important and pleasant memories. In 1998, I made my first trip to New York. The Air Canada a319 followed this pattern for 31. At 3:06, I looked out the window, at a steeper angle than is in this video, and saw the plane making a big left turn around the Statute of Liberty. It was an amazing right. I was in New York for what proved to be life-changing medical treatment; the flight was all part of the experience. Thanks for posting.

@@zachunderwood9586 The Empire State Building was the most recognizable building in Manhatten, and the building that I looked for first. Other notable buildings were the Chrysler Building, the Pan Am Building and the United Nations. The twin towers of the World Trade Centre were, at first, a bit of a challenge to pick out from within the "jungle" of buildings because of the altitude of the aircraft. The buildings were basically featureless, from a distance, unlike the other more distinct structures mentioned. However, as the plane continued to descend, the WTC became easier to identify.

In my day, this was called the Expressway visual approach for runway 31. After passing the southern tip of Manhattan, the pilot follows the east river up to the Maspeth tanks (I just updated this, the approach now flies over Brooklyn, not the East river), then turning right to follow the Long Island expressway until almost intersecting the centerline of runway 31. This takes a path near the old World's Fair grounds and the Stadium (CITI) used by the METS. Turn left and basically cross over the water at about 500 feet to land straight ahead. What is remarkable in this video is the clear sky and great visibility. Great landing too!

Looks like they are flying the Expressway Visual approach to RWY 31 at KLGA. I have flown it many times while I was based in New York flying a Boeing 757 from 2000 to my retirement in 2015. Very challenging, but great fun! A chance to do what I call "sport flying", just like a Cessna pilot would do, except I was flying a big jet airliner. We would fly to the big white Maspeth gas tanks in Brooklyn, then follow the BQE expressway until abeam Citi Field, then make a huge left turn and line up on final approach to Runway 31. While it was never verbalized by the LGA tower controller, they expected you to stop prior to the intersection of RWY 31 and RWY 4/22 because they would be taking off on RWY4. It was a matter of professional pride to stop in such a short distance, and any pilot who could not stop and went through the intersection was held in low esteem by other pilots and ATC, but it was perfectly legal to do so.

I was an ATC at LGA 1989-2000. This looks like the "expressway visual approach RW 31". This was a great approach for the pilots but for ATC it could sometimes be a pain. On this approach all planes did not turn "base" at the same place so this lead to spacing issues and actually delayed departures. Anyway, it was fun to watch. I heard they had taken down the "Maspeth Tanks", so it was no longer on the approach plates. Hard to miss two giant red and white checker board painted gas tanks on final.

Ahh landings at the good old U.S.S. LaGuardia to make pilots feel like they are Top Gun... From 7:45 to 8:10 you'll notice the plane does a very sharp turn around Citi Field (where the Mets play). Growing up, when it was Shea Stadium, planes were less efficient and louder, and I think that route used to actually be quite a bit closer. The roar of the jets was so distracting that pitchers would sometimes wait for it to throw a pitch since batters would see an MD-88 or other noisemaker roaring out past the outfield from right to left. It was a cool home field advantage to know the landing routes that day.

Great view of Manhattan! It would look even better at night

I still prefer bright daylight, as I can see the details much more easily. It's all good on a clear day, night or day. Aarre Peltomaa

I watched this on my Laptop up close with headphones on during my first beer of the weekend after work, For ten minutes in a beer buzz it brought back great memories of free travel before the nightmare of Pandemic, Coming from Ireland we used to land in JFK but this was a wonderful new experience for me, Thank you.

This was an amazing video showing the amazing views of NYC and approach to LGA. I’ve been on board doing the same many times. This video is truly amazing and brought me joy. You are very talented. 😊

It will be a looooooong time before it returns to anything like it was. The governor and mayor have devastated the place with the draconian mandates. Almost 40% of the restaurants are gone and God only knows when the lights of Broadway will be lit again. It's surrealistically unsettling to walk through Times Square. Vids of just two years ago seem like that of a lost civilization. How bad are things? Even the hallowed Met Museum, one of the greatest in the world, had to sell some of its collection to make ends meet.

I just returned from a flight last week from MSP to LGA sitting on the left side of the plane at a window seat (on Delta to boot), & this video felt like a detailed playback of what I experienced - including the very smooth landing. Thanks for posting !

Incredible footage! A little low on that spiral base turn to runway 31 no? Is that the standard approach?
@ach11993 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's the standard approach from the south because JFK is severel miles to the east/south east from that base turn. I've been on the same approach dozens of times and it's a thrill every time.

I remember my 1st time flying in from Detroit and my jaw dropped at how good the views were. I was so lucky to be on the port side of the plane.

Amazing seeing the evolution of Manhattan's skyline over the recent years with the New World Trade Center, and all those super skinny megatall buildings popping up around Central Park!

Well done! And what a clear view. Thanks to the pandemic? And what a smooth landing! Only sad thing is the missing WTC 1 and 2. I was on top of it in 1993. What a great loss for the skyline. Together with the Empire Stat building they were the landmarks of NYC.
@thehouseofcrumblingidols26942 жыл бұрын
Don't forget WTC Building 7 fell the same day due to "unrelated office fires".
