I'd greatly appreciate it if some old-school JM fans would check out my acoustic piano & vocal covers of CLARITY and LOVE SOON on my channel. Real live acoustic. Thanks and peace out.

I realy like this version.. played by him when he was like 22 or 21 years old. You can see how he perfected it throughout the years in his L.A. concert.. he makes the bass much more alive there.

The stool squeaking at the beginning of this song has always resonated in me. I remember I made a mix cd of JM with the Room for squares and live in La versions of Neon and felt that something was missing, it was this version, and that stool.

Probably my favorite recording of my favorite John Mayer tune. I love the unproduced, acoustic rendition. I even like the shuffling with the music stand before he starts playing. It sounds authentic. The guy really knows how to handle a guitar. For anyone who has ever had a bipolar girlfriend that's gone through a manic episode, that will feel pretty authentic, too.

Right, really I agree. I've been using the L.A. version to learn it. Been slowing it down in the software. And I appreciate what your saying about the two finger thing. I'm forcing myself to learn it that way, because I want that 'ragtime' technique under my fingers, and this is a pleasurable way to train myself in it. I'm so impressed with that guy! Not only can he play this, he wrote the #*& thing! Pop star, great lyricist, great melodies, and killer guitarist. Just amazing.

Haha..no one has commented in three years.. hey guys! My dad showed me this song. Trying to learn it on the guitar. This version is much better than the others I've heard.😊👍🏽
@joeymeyer47976 жыл бұрын
LifeIsNotTumblr the best version is from Where The Light Is, Nokia Theater 2008! Your dad sounds like a cool dude. I’m 19 now and this was the first John Mayer song I heard and learned to play. It’s really difficult but extremely rewarding!
@lifeisnottumblr71486 жыл бұрын
Wow..that version is better. I started learning guitar about a year ago, and I'm fourteen now. And yea, my dad's always showing me new music...well new for me at least. How long did this song take for you to learn? I can play it, but not quite as well as John..
@jorgetolentino4634 жыл бұрын
LifeIsNotTumblr I like this one better, personally I like the arpeggios more and the fact he doesn’t strum them like in the where the light is version! But just my preference (:

He uses his thumb and index finger, kind of like clawing at the guitar. It's his thumb that produces the percussion sound.

@bigearsman14 жыл бұрын
@Ccbroo I know what you mean. But I think that's more a function of the bass frequencies being under-emphasized in this studio version. His thumb sounds pretty lively here too, just quieter/less bassy. Lately I've been working on learning that guitar part. I've been playing for a lot of years, and that guitar part is proving to be very challenging. But I intend to nail it, and post a video at some point. I may need another month or two (!!)

@bigearsman I realy like the LA version better. Like you said it appears to have more volume, but I think what makes it sound better is that he returns to the base C in between every chord when moving on the next while I think he doesn't do it here (or its very quiet). Tried to get this song down myself, but the alternating index finger thumb thing is just too hard for me.. maybe in a few months ill get it down with 5 fingers but never with only 2 like he does

I find this better instrumentally, but vocally it's a tie between the Room for Squares version and the Where the Lights are version. He hits the notes much more effortless on those versions.
