Thanks Jamie I think I have finally got an understanding now having watched many other videos on the same subject on how you measure the depth on your rod. Probably more about me being thick when it comes to fishing though.

I'm an experienced Angler and this lead on from a MAP video I watched however, after being intrigued to see if I could plumb up better, I felt compelled to comment on this. Firstly, removing the shot from the bulk float to the bottom can damage or fray the line. Why risk it? Furthermore, why are you fishing a hook-length when waggler fishing? If the hook link is absolutely necessary then why on earth are you using a cumbersome swivel too? This just upsets any shot pattern and makes the bait appear unnatural. A plummet was invented as a tool to eradicate the need to keep removing split shot and you can get a really good feel for where the bottom is. You mention about the plummet sinking into silt being inaccurate yet you fish a 'hook-length' over depth? You might as well not plumb up you bell end. The plummet has a flat bottom which actually stops it sinking deep into the silt, compared to a round split-shot. In any case most are corked or slow sinking these days. This method is madness and exactly the sort of overcomplicated 'match jargon' that confuses kids and makes them catch nothing. Trust me, use a plummet and a waggler with two float rubbers for max stabilisation. You're at dead depth when your float tip just touches the surface of the water. If the lakes silty, use common sense and fish an inch under depth or use a lighter plummet. You can then snip the top rubber afterwards. Also you appear to be plumbing up about 10 miles away on the far bank. If that's where you want to fish waggler, go put your box there and stop encouraging beginners to take up beach casting!

Just pinch a swan shot onto the hook and cast out

if you absolutely dont want to use a plummet just put 1 or 2 big swans on the hook

Oldskoolfool Totally agree one large shot on the hook as it does not damage the line and still causes little disturbance. Use tippex or elastic band to mark off the depth on the rod as a reference and move the float up or down accordingly e.g. to fish 4ins over depth move the float up 4 ins. The position and spread of the shot along the line will determine the speed the bait will fall through the water column e.g. Small shot spaced evenly will result in a slow decent where as if tightly grouped near the hook length the bait will descend quickly to that depth.

very interesting vid thanks for posting. Good way to get it right just a few mins and that's it..Thank you..Alan from Norfolk..U.K

Perfect sense. When the bottom weight touches the deck, your float will react accordingly. Sink 2 deep or rise 2 much. Great tip!

Take an aaa off and use an ssg as a plummet, this way if it's too shallow will sink not sit normally.
@hanksyav7511 жыл бұрын
will this work with lighter shotting patterns?

I'm not sure I like this approach. I haven't fished for years, btw, but looking to start again. Couldn't this method damage your line as you slide weights up and down?

So what’s the point of having a plummet in your box like you said you should at the beginning
@pathfinder57997 жыл бұрын
I very rarely see course anglers use a swivel when float fishing. Is this your personal preference?
@CB-xr1eg7 жыл бұрын
I use a swivel for 2 reasons, it gives you weight to sink the hook/bait, and it stops tangles A size 14 rolling/barrel swivel is adequate. By the way, " coarse " not " course ".

If I pinch a my dropper shot on the hook in stead of swivel would that give bottom depth with out laying on ?
@DeejayNally6 жыл бұрын
Either an SSG or an LSG shot will do.
@aeroken18 жыл бұрын
What a stupid way. So if you have th correct weight on you wont know if you have set your float too shallow as all the weights will take the float down. Why not just put on another AA shot so it will take it down. simples.
@shaunfarrington73613 жыл бұрын
Surely by doing this you end up a whole hook length over depth which kind of defeats the “plumbing up with a plummet because it sinks into the silt “ argument. An ssg shot would have done the trick but without making the commotion that a heavy plummet would.
@jakestanton13507 жыл бұрын
Or just use lighter plummet?
@lw95148 жыл бұрын
i personally find it easier to load the float correctly so its tipping. do not attach a hook length then use a swan shot above the loop on the mainline . .wait 4 the float slowly to just tip. now you know you are dead dead depth! then when you tie desired hook length you depending how long you make it, will be how over depth you will be! i fish a 4 inch hook length. i fish 2 inches over depth on most still water venues!

I have wagglers that are calibrated in AAs but I can't get any AA shot. It isn't even on conversion charts.

What a load of waffle, shot your float so the tip shows then put on a larger shot and cast to where you want to fish, adjust your float accordingly. Why do these people always have to over complicate things?

Absolutely agree with this. A plumb can sink far into silt, so the depth is not accurately measured and they can be very heavy when you're fishing with light tackle. You can also do the same as they did here, but keep all the 3 shots next to the float, but add a heavy shot near the swivel - under depth the float will sink, over depth it will be perfect, so juts alter the float depth until it just sinks and hey presto you have the correct depth.

So what’s the purpose of a plummet? Preston, Guru, Korum etc haven’t realised they’re wasting their time!!!! Has anyone told Lee Kerry its a fluke he’s been winning matches using a plummet?
