Magnificent...Wagner himself would have approved. The entire last section of the recording (at the last key change) is one big, long crescendo - just like it's supposed to be. The dynamics are so well-managed that they always leave a little bit left in the tank to get to one more level of intensity - just when you think there can't BE another one.

That key change, down a half step, turns expectations around, but works terrifically.

Wagner's genius coupled with the right band. A bit partial, since I was a Marine bandsman in the 1970's. Great as ever and getting better.

Most bands never get Elsa to the threshold at the end. Making sounds of chop relief during the music is an issue. Beautiful work.

Yes, this is an excellent group. But in my view this performance, or at least the recording of the performance, has issues that degrade the whole. Listen to the bass line....all the other parts are subtle and lyrical, but the bass line thuds and stomps on every note entrance.....my guess is that the tubas were being more lyrical, but they mixed in the string bass part at too high a level and probably had the mic too close as well, resulting in an aggressive character that does not fit or belong in this music. I have this CD and really love it, but every time it comes to this piece I cringe. Then I go to some recordings of good high school and college bands that I have recorded, and the playing in this regard is much more musical. So yes, there are defensible reasons why somebody might not like this particular recording of this piece, and give it a thumbs down, without in any way indicating that the group itself is not a great one. Even the best performers can put out a less than exemplary performance from time to time.

I remember playing this in high school my junior or senior year and played the piccolo on it. First time playing it was when we got together with other bands from the area of my state and played together. When we were put together with one other band, we were sitting next to each respective chair placement.

Is it a difficult piccolo part? Haha just wondering, it’s on my listening list for this upcoming school year (I’m playing picc. this year)
@FLmickey90 Жыл бұрын
@@katherine4162 From what I remember, no it isn't/wasn't. It has been over 30 years since I've played it (I graduated in 1992 and it was either fall of 90 or fall of 91 when played as a combined band and then back at our high school). But remember of all the piccolo parts I've played, it was one of my favorites! It is a bit different than the flute part from time to time.

Indeed. I know exactly what you mean. No soul. This is a problem that professional and elite college wind ensemble groups have sometimes. What it is is that, in high school, there is a tendency among players to sometimes want to "stand out" at their prominent moments. Sometimes this means a trumpet with a bit too much vibrato or a french horn that's too loud or whatever. Many times it's inappropriate, sometimes, particularly in the hands of more skilled players, it is absolutely stunning and entirely appropriate to be "too loud." In college, they beat that urge out of you with the emphasis on "blend" in which everyone must fit perfectly into "the sound." Now this is absolutely necessary; it is the difference between a professional string section where they all play perfectly together and a high school string section in which everyone's individual quirks stick out like sore thumbs. But it does make everyone a little more timid especially if you have a harsh conductor. Gone are those loud dramatic trumpet vibratos at the climax of a piece or a french horn soaring unhindered into the stratosphere. Doesn't happen all or even most of the time, but it does happen enough with these professional wind ensemble recordings that I get annoyed sometimes. Also, these professional wind ensembles often tend to have one or only a few players to a part which sometimes gives a sort of sterile/MIDI sound compared to a large group of 80+. Big difference between one french horn to a part and 3 or 4.
